Want to Lift 97 XLT

97 Ranger xlt with 4.0 if that helps.
I would like to lift the suspension but also heard that's bad for wearing parts. Should I do suspension or body lift? Also what else would I need for that besides wheels, tires, and money?

Your truck has fords I-beam from end. You can go up to 2" or so with spacers or lift coils before you need a proper lift kit (anymore than 2" and you'll have issues aligning it). Companies like skyjacker and rough country make 4-6" lift kits for your truck. They run in the 4-700 dollar range (been a while since I looked though). That's just for the kit, which includes drop brackets, lift coils, etc. Install would be a separate cost. A proper suspension lift causes no added wear to your suspension. It maintains factory angles and ride. Now, bigger tires and off-roading are another story. Lol.

You can do a body lift as well. A 3" body lift will run you about 200 bucks (again, without instal)

You depending on how big of a tire you want to run, you may need to regear.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head; all you need is money. Lol.

Being a newbie to lifts and all I know this is a dumb question. Is there anyway to diy a spacer for the coils? If not can I find some at a pull-a-part place?

you can stack washers under the coils and then just tack weld the washers together. you can body lift up to about 2 inches with spacers and very little else. if you go with 1-1/2 inch of body lift you can buy 6 3 inch spacers and cut them in half. install with longer bolts and your good.

Not really. Coil spacers are the bottom of the barrel as far as lifts go. They're pretty cheap. They are 100 bucks or less. Don't go over 2" though. Just because somebody makes them, doesn't mean they are a good idea.
