Spindle mashing into LCA

Spindle mashing into LCA

So far my spindle lift is great but I have noticed the spindle mashes in the LCA. I am guessing the round little rubber piece is the steering stop on the LCA. The spindle hits just below it. I am thinking of grinding off more of the LCA so the spindle does not hit it and relocating the steering stop down and inch or so, allowing it to stop the spindle. Anyone done something like this? I am not to worried about it but it seems over time it could eat up the LCA. Thanks

yea a lot of people grinded off part of the LCA...get your full turning radius back...

Ya I did some extra grinding on the LCA but the thing stopping the spindle is the LCA and not the steering stop. Its easy to see where it hits. Maybe next weekend i'll trying dropping down the steering stop and let you guys know how it goes.

yea...people have grinded off the lip on the LCA where the spindle hits...not the bump stop

guy with the fabtech spindles here... i didnt grind the LCA and my steering radius sux... should i grind more? will i benefit that much?? and my spindle doesnt hit the LCA, its actually the lower bolt on the backside of my brake caliper thats hitting the steering stop that came witht the fabtech kit

this is my situation... my lower bolt on the spindle (not the brake caliper as i incorrectly stated) hits the steering stop...

when i turn all the way to the left, the spindle rotates to the rear towards the steering stop. the lip on the back of the spindle not the bolt appears to hit the lip of the LCA FIRST and seems to lift the suspension, then the lower bolt on the spindle comes in contact with the steering stop...

my question is, my steering radius is pretty bad, do i NEED a steering stop?
if i grinded down the LCA so the lip on the spindle as i described does not hit the LCA (allowing for more radius) and removed the steering stop, i would regain my steering radius, but is this safe to myself driving wise, and is this safe to other parts of the suspension??

without the stops the caliper will hit the LCA and the piston in the caliper will be pressed back into the bore and you will lose brakes i drove that way for a few months until i put the steering stops on and i prefer the reduced steering radius to losing brakes when turning (i almost hit a car in a parking lot)

In my case it looks like all i need to do is grind more of the LCA lip below the steering stop so the spindle can actually hit the steering stop. Hey txboy11, Where are your steering stops?

see the hole above the stops in his pictures... thats where the stock steering stop was... and you are correct that only one side hits when turning... not sure why though

oh ok I thought he said he had them still there but did not see them.
My turning radius is actually pretty good but should be even better when I trim the LCA lip. Does it look to you guys that the triangle piece on the spindle will hit the steering stop correctly on my pics?

it only will hit one side when turning, but it depends on which way you turn...


my steering stops are the big silver, out of place looking things...
i had to grind off the old one to install this one, as my spindle didnt wanna hit the existing stop... i really wanna configure a way to free up some more turing radius with a new steering stop

i had to grind the lip off also...but i would probably stay away from turing the wheel at full lock anyways. You will get a better turning radius back but other components in the steering cant compensate for the extra length it must stretch...

Well I wonder if I should just leave it alone or grind more. You can see where the spindle hits the LCA, that little flat spot below the steering stop. It does not seem to hurt anything, and I try to not turn at full lock. What you guys think, grind more so it hits the steering stop or not bother so I dont screw anything up?

Chedster,

Have you been able to see if that triangular tab lines up with the steering stop if you turned the spindle towards it?

If it does, instead of grinding away at the lip, you can cut off the steering stop and replace it with a longer bolt instead that comes past the lip of the control arm.

Similiar to what fabtech has done with the 1998 - 2000 spindles:

See steps 5 and 6. I'm not sure why they don't include this new steering stop in the '01+ spindle kits since obviously there is a problem.

I have some fabtech spindles that I'm going to be installing on my '06 this weekend and am going to do what I just described. I'll take some pics.

Ya thats a good idea with the bolt. I was gonna work on it tonight after work so i'll let you know if that tab lines up with the stop. Thanks man
