02-07 Factory Wheels on a 98 4X4

I got a set of factory wheels from a Ranger. I think they are found on 02-07.
They are like:

When I had the tires mounted the guy told me they wouldn't fit the front of my Ranger because they are 2wd wheels. He said he could tell because the center cap was so small. I turned the wheel around and showed him the back was much larger and would clear the hub.

Well we put them on and did fit but they pushed the center cap out about 1/8". I left them on and drove the truck - seems OK, no rubbing or noises.
They do seem to fit with a small gap between the auto locking hub and the wheel. Has anyone ever seen this?
Is there something I need to do to put the center caps on? Is there a safety issue?
Thanks

They came on 2wd and 4wd and should fit no problem. I don't know why they would push out the center cap. Maybe someone else would know. I have those wheels on my 02' 4wd.

The center sticks out because the 4X4 hub on the '98 sticks out. The newer rangers do not have the hub for the 4X4. And, no worries on the rims fitting your truck. They will be ok.

Thanks guys! Now I just have to find some kind of center cap.

Maybe I will try to cut down the backs of the originals.
