Load E Dilemma

Hey all, a friend of mine is sitting on some Toyo Open Country A/T's and hes looking to sell them. They are nearly brand new and he will take $300 for all 4. I recognize this is a good deal, and I would take them, However there is one problem. They are (265/75/16) Load Range E, which is way to stiff and heavy then I want for a 2009 FX4.

What I'm looking for is everyone's opinion on the situation. Should I buy the tires and just deal with the affect of Load E (which I'm not really sure is that bad), OR should I pass... What would you do?

Anyone running Load E I would be interested on how your truck drives.

Brob.

I run the KM2, E - Load Range, Steppie std Cab.
18 PSI rears and 20 Front make it ride a lot better than the 30 psi in the tires when I got them.
I may drop a little more just for grins.

I have load range D and put over 40,000 miles on them and they haven't even begin to start to wear. the load range E have a life range of 60,000+ miles, while C has a 35-40,000 miles. comfort or longevity, it's your choice.

Well, I don't want to sacrifice ride quality and I would have to pay someone to mount the new tires. Meaning if I don't like them it could cost me some coin going back to stock tires. I'll just pass. I'd be cool if I didn't know the guy and could flip them and make some cash but hes a good friend. I think I will just tell him they are worth a lot more.

I want bigger tires badly, these stock 255/70/16 looks pathetic just cant justify wasting good tires. Looks like ill be waiting for these to wear out before I go any bigger... or unless I find another cheap set of tires. I have the Pre-Keys sitting here waiting for that day. Those duratracs in Load C look nice...

There are manufacturer that make larger tire in lower ranges, i.e. “C”.
Stick to a 15” Wheel size, when you go metric, 285x75x16, that when you go to LT or Light Truck Tires and they up up fact in the load ranges to D and E.

I had a set of 285/75/16 nitto terra grapplers load range E on my truck for a while. I couldn’t even tell that I had used them, I would say buy them and put them on after you wear out the tires you have now. I don’t think it was really that bad till I cranked my tbars but thats just my 2 cents

oh and fwiw, air down a tiny bit in the rear since the bed is so light. i run 25 lbs in the rear tires and 30 in the fronts and it seems to ride nicely now. also added weight in the bed helps too.

you can almost run them flat, i ran over a nail and only had about 10 pounds in the rear and you couldnt tell it was going flat

Good information, Thanks for the replies! I told the guy they were worth more than double hes offering (CAD). I'm going on a 2600km road trip soon. then after I have my 20,000km service and I'm going to get the Ford dealer to put on 265/75/16 Load C Duratracs, install my pre-key, Install belltech 6400 shackles ( which i will probably buy from JB's or Mopac) and then adjust my speedo. Exciting but expensive stuff, I figure around $1500 for it all but its worth it. My trucks going to look a lot different, and most importantly the rides not going to be much different. I promise to get pics up of before and after ASAP.

Load E rated tires on a ranger is a bad move. E range is for 1 ton tucks... not rangers. My E350 that weighs just over 10,500 has E rated tires and that thing rides very hard...

The ranger has C rated BFG's and as of late I have been hauling serious weight with it, with out any problems... (as in double the 600lb bed rating)

I lowered the pressure in the rear to 16 psi on the E-Rated KM2s.
Still bouncy but was when stock, just too lite.
With full load ok but the look is great.
