Tire wear...need new ones yet????

Tire wear...need new ones yet????

I have 31" Firestone RMT's and they are worn down pretty good. The center lugs aren't as deep as the outside lugs, thus the center ones are getting low; most of them are being close to being flush to flat. But, the outside lugs are deep yet, at least 1/2" of tread. How will I know when they are worn enough/too much to replace and/or be safe?
I don't care if the center tread part is flat/slick, since the outside lugs are pretty wide apart to dissipate water. They are worn to/possibly past the wear marks.
I'm not stupid when it comes to tires or anything, i'm just looking for opinions. haha

whats your psi at? thats probably why only your middle is worn....
just do the penny test and see what your at..

I figured my psi out to be around 45psi or to to wear correctly.
The tire has more rubber built up in the center, it's not wearing unevenly at all. I'll try to find a pic to explain a little.
The penny test will definately pass on the outer lugs, but prob not in the center, that's what i'm saying.

you have way to much air in your tires! air it down so the tire wear right

you are running way to much PSI in those tires.....you shouldn't run more than the max on the sidewall...........that is probably 35psi.....that is your problem......

My tires say 50psi max cold!

I was running around 35 I believe and it was wearing the outsides.


It's not a wear problem that i'm talking about! The tires have a raised section of tread on the center strip coming from the inner part of the tire.

Between the parallel lines the inner part of the tire is raised up higher in the center as shown on the cross-section drawn on the bottom. All of the lugs are worn evenly, but there is less volume in the center because the actual tube tire part is thicker there. Per the cross-section on the bottom, the lugs are on top of the line that I drew. It's sort of hard to understand without the actual pic, i'll take a pic of my actual tire this weekend.

if the center is almost flush, it's time for new ones a week ago.... just outside tread wont do you much good

tires only give the max.... your turck will determain the best psi for the wieght and towing capacity, if the center is the only part wearing your tires are way to full making them bulge in the center and your only getting contact in that part....

I know that.

First of all, they are different size and type of tires than stock, so the truck recommendation specs can't really pertain.
The tire is wearing evenly, read the previous posts for the explanation of the question on hand.

if just the center of the tire is wearing you DO have too much psi in the tires....what you need to do is run it though water puddle and see how much of the tire is leaving a footprint.......i would guanantee that it is just the center which means too MUCH AIR!

It sounds like you just need new tires. The center section sounds like its worn but the outside of the tire has some good meat out on the sidewalls, is that what you are talking about? If thats the case and hole road contact section of the tires is worn then you need new tires.

Sorry about not posting pics...I took my truck on thursday to the dealer to see what was making a ridiculous noise in 4x4, it ends up being the transfer case, and they had to keep it all weekend; and yesterday they called that they had to order a load of parts all over the country to repair it. I'm not sure what's broken, but my extended warranty is covering it...50$ !
I'll post a pic of the tires when I get my rig back.

I have 3 toyos with 55-60% tread on them I'd sell for almost free..
265/75R16
I'm about 1h45m from pittsburg.
If you have center tread STILL it means the airpressure is fine..

Whe UNDERINFLATED the sides wear more. Also the sides wear more on the front
end from turning.
I run 38 in the front and 33 in the back but I do have alot of crap in there that isnt stock.

If you think the airpressure on the truck is meaningful how do you explain the fact that
that heaviest model of ranger which weighs over 1000# more then the smallest
they all call for 30#

there are several tricks you can do with your new ones to determine the best pressure
the paper edge test to start then chalk wear

My wheels are 15's, thanks for the offer though!

The rangers call for 30psi on the truck. Each tire may call for a different psi, even noted on tire websites. If the tire is weaker than a stock one, it may request a higher pressure in order to ride right. I know what you're saying.

Ford's specs are a little off, why do they say that the ride height of every Ranger is the same, when a 4x2 will definately be lower than a 4x4, and an FX4 will be higher than both?


My tire wear has NOTHING to do with the pressure! I'll post a pic of what i'm talking about when I get my truck back in a few days. Nobody has understood what i'm talking about yet. It has nothing to do with pressure-induced uneven wear.

Finally got my truck back, I had to get the transfer case rebuilt! Cost me a $50 deductible.
Here's some pics of my tire, check out the middle, there's a raised part of the tread making the middle bald; but the outside lugs are really open yet. The treadwear/pressure is perfect across the section of the tire.

yea.....next set you get just air them down some..............you should take and put some water on the road infront of the tires, then drive through it and for another couple of feet, that will show what part of the tread is contacting the ground......then adjust the psi to were all the tread is in contact with the ground!
