33's took all the power! what shoudl I do?

This summer I switched to some 285/75/16 BFG all terrain load range E. The power loss was horrible and I can't even use 5th gear most hte time now. I absolutely have to do something.

Previously I was running 265/75/r16 load range C toyo A/T. I had ample power and could accelrate up hills easily in 5th gear. Same hill now is 4th or even 3rd. Today I put another set on order. I am pretty happy with this tire but I would like something with a little more aggresive tread
One guy said the weight of the tire has a really big effect on the power loss. The toyo A/T weighs like 43 lbs. Bfgoodrich doesn't have the tires weight on their site but I found one post that said the bfg's I have are 54lbs.

i'm wondering if I got a 265/75/16 bfg load range E if I would have ample power. I wish they made this tire in a D or C load range so maybe it wouldn't skip around so much on pavement and weigh less.

What is my best option here? Back to the old toyo's I mean they have taken me down some insane roads I can't complain too much about them.

I also considered a torque tune. I'm going to loose probably 300 by changeing tires. I could get a tuner for about the same price. But I don't know that it will be enough power gain to get it back how it was.

If you want to keep your new tires then your only option is to regear to 4.56's. Otherwise, you could go back down in tire size. A tune will help, but it won't be able to make up for the tire size change. By the way, I am running 285/75R16's with 4.56 gears and am very happy with the power/torque.

DO you think going to a 32 instead of 33 would be enough to bring the power back?

Like toyo makes a mud terrain in 285/70/16 load range c. Its aggresive, it looks good, its only a tiny bit taller then the 265/75 but it weighs 60 LBS!

its like 20lbs heavier then the toyo at but the same size.

Does anyone know if there is a site that shows how much all the BFG tires weigh?

Nice truck there i'm trying to move up to oregon in a year or two. Offroading in oregon is weak though after you been to colorado and the high sierra.

What size tires did you have stock? I don't see why you wouldn't be happy with 265's and 4.10's. I had 3.73 gears with 265's and I was happy, but it doesn't compare to 285's and 4.56's.

Yeah. Thats what I was thinking. I have 4.10's and 33's, and I pull my four wheeler, and lots of other things with my ranger, and it does fine. Yes it does kill it, but not THAT much. But theres only a few things you can do, re-gear, supercharger, or smaller tires. All of which are expensive in my book. lol

I'm worried load range E 265/75 bfg's will be too heavy and I still won't have as much power. Because they are 10 ply instead of 6 they must weigh more then the toyo.

The 265 toyos performed good on and offroad got me over some of the highest passes in colorado and california just thousands of miles pounding them offroad. I just kind of like the look of bfgs and found they perform better in mud and snow

I can't say the toyo's let me down. They did survive imogene. This road was nuts and on one side of the pass it was raining. You can't even get out of the car to take photos of the rough and steep places.

The problem is your truck is a stick...so you feel everything so much more than the guys with automatics. You feel your higher revs, it's much louder, the shifts get rougher...it feels different, like you're hurting the truck...where as the guys with autos just roll on and hit the gas pedal just a little bit harder.

I've got 33's on my 3.0 and it's not bad except for pulling out on a hill from a red light. Otherwise, I just let it rev a bit higher.

Pulling out on a real steep hill is insane in my stick! I was thinking its cuz it is a stick.

I just got off the phone with tires place they had the weight spec even though its not on the bfg site. He said my current tires are like 58 lbs and the 265's are 48 the toyo is 44 so thats good enough for me. I'm on the way to get them installed.

yeah, get the 265s and call it a day. I love bigger tires just as much as the next guy, but I still run 31s even though i could fit 33s (with some rubbing) because its my daily driver and the compromise is worth it every day.

lol nah...when my son was born last September, we decided that I would get rid of my nice new truck lol and just get me something to go to and from work. Since I'm a mechanic, I don't *need* the latest, greatest...but keep my wife's car up to date and new. I'm not going to lie, I miss it...and if I could pack my lunch more, not have internet on my phone, and the best digital cable stuff out there I'd still be in it...ahh well. I'm starting to like my Ranger more and more though...it definitely has more personality....although I will admit that with the upgrades I've thrown at it, it has probably cost me more than the F150 would have so far.

I've driven Lord Of War's truck...he has 295x75's. Over a 33. He has the 4.0 and 4.10s and it seems to have plenty of power.

got the new tires on. power is back up to my standards AND I find its cornering way better on the pavement. THe 33's the sidewall flexes so much the tires skip around it feels better now. I gotta clean the k&n filter too its got to be filthy that is taking a few ponies too i'm sure. I don't think my camper shell and another 70lbs in my carpet kit help thats about 300 extra pounds plus its 4x4 that is also heavy. When i first got my truck even with the camper shell but the stock tires I could do great burnouts. In the rain it would just smokem thru 2nd even with the camper shell and all my tools in the back. the 265 couldn't burn out if I tried and 33's just not even tolerable when driving in the mtns.

Hmmmm. This thread just put some doubt in my mind. I was going to buy some 33's for my fx-4. I didn't know it would take away so much torque... I live in a town buit on three hills lol. I'd like to have your opinion guys. Would it still be pleasant driving with some 33's with a 4.10 diff as a daily driver? Or would it be better with some 31's? In the last few days I was hesitant between both the 31's and the 33's but I fear that with prekey mod, body lift, shackles and t-bar crank, 31's would look ridiculously small. ( also keeping in mind that I'll get the superlift in about a year).

What are you guys suggesting me? And how much would a 4.56 cost?

Most of the people on this forum who have 33's have 4.10's, and from what I've read most everyone says it is just fine. You are going to spend big money to regear.

Yeah I'm curently readling on it and finally I think everything will be juste fine. A 3.73 (which usually comes stock) on 30's will act about exactly as a 4.10 on 33's. I've juste made the conversion with the calculator on "therangerstation" lol.

Anyway thanks for the reply!

Everyone has different expectations, but you have nothing to worry about.
