Hey everyone. I am looking to purchase some new tires in the next week or so and I would like your opinions or testimonials(Woo...big word!), especially in snow and ice. My tires now are 235x75R15 but I am looking to go up to a 31". I live in the mountains of PA so snow is a gimme and this is my daily driver. The most important factors to me is snow traction, wear and off-road, mud and dirt

I narrowed it down to 3, I figured there all comparable in price. Here they are:

Dueler AT = Currently have these on my truck, not bad off and on the road but the Destination AT's I had last year were better in the snow. Sizes come in 31x10.5R15 and 265x75R15. The last one is about a 30.6" tire. Firestone sells these. Have my account there and most of the work I can't do there. I trust them and they have never ripped me off. A bit pricey but they back up there work, which I have tested a few times.
Discover S/T = Size is 31x10.5R15 Don't know to much about these but I had Coopers on my Trans-Am and they were great. My local Lehigh Tire Cooper dealer sells these.
BFG All Terrain T/A = Size is 31x10.5R15 Don't know much about these but I see many people on this site and the others I visit have these. My local Jack Williams sells these.

Let me see some replies.

This is starting to be a run away victory for the BFG. So far I can live with this. My top 2 were the Dueler's or BFG's.

Let's here some other opinions.

 

I would go with the Cooper S/T...buddy has em on his Ranger and loves. They clear out WAY better than BFG. STT would be the best though. The STT is awesome.

I had them they did awesome in snow and rain.

Discoverer ST - I've had them on my truck for a little over 3 years and 30,000 miles. Awesome tire! They are excellent in the snow and are also good in the rain. I rotate and balance them every 6,000 and they still have well over 1/2 tread left.

 

Why?!? They are a fantastic tire.

The longer I own mine, the more convinced I become that there is a reason the BFG ATs is such a popular tire.

I have just under 4 years and ~50k miles on my factory BFG AT's. They don't look new, but they have worn well. They are very good in the wet and in the snow. I am very happy w/ mine. The worst thing about them is the road noise.. and it isn't that bad.

 

Or you could go with the "most hated brand of tire here" general at2's. Awesome tire for the price.

i have almost 50k on my bfg's and they still have lots of tread left... i rotate every 5k miles

 

im poor i went with the general grabber at2's for $90 a piece - 265/70/16 i couldnt be happier unless they were cheaper. they simply kick ***... they look far more aggressive than the over priced bfg's, and their performance is just fantastic! i have had mine about 5K miles (gonna hafta rotate them very soon) and they have surprised me everytime i 'tested' them.... simply put, a sweet tire. for the price of one set of bfg's, i could have bought 2 sets of the at2's

I researched tires for about a year before i bought htem, and every time i came back to the at2's.

 

I here ya on the poor status. I'm busting my **s to get the money for tires.

Where can you get the Generals? Are they ok in the snow? You're from Buffalo so I'm sure you have plenty experience with that.

 

Why are they so hated?

 

Because of the history of the genera at had. Everyone thinks that that first at sucked ballz so why wouldn't the at2's suck ballz. I have to say they are better then my bfg's i had on my old ranger and would buy again. So basically everyone except us few guys that are poor and can't afford bfg's hates the at2's cause they are made by general.

 

Cooper S/T! They look like mudders, but have an all-terrain tread pattern, which means they should be awesome in show, rain, and light off-roading. Im actually looking to get them...

Anyone know where to buy them online? All i can find is Cooper STT, i need 35x12.50..

Looks like its either the BFG or the General. I'll have to do some researdh on the Generals before I decide.

 

i got my generals at tirerack, however 2004ranger got them from another dealer that has $9 shipping....

they work great in the snow, and i havent gotten stuck in my driveway with them yet, like i did with the crpyears (got stuck a few times in my unplowed driveway, sad i know) I tested ice performance by the airport in a parking lot that is a huge skating rink like in the winter, the rts tires didnt stop worth a damn, but the grabbers did. I did noticed that the get up and go traction was decent, but the stopping taction was AMAZING. step on the break and u better bet wearing your seatbelt cause they stop on a dime in snow, slush, wet roads, and pretty fast on ice even. and if your in the real snow belt, their drilled for studs as well, so u can put studs in them if u live out in the sticks.... something the "bfgs" dont have.

 

General makes Cheap tires, I'll wait til I see some AT2's with 70K+ on them before I'll pass judgement, but I have seen many sets of BFG's with 70K+ on them and still had decent tread. The only tire companies I buy are Michelin, BFG, Kumho, Bridgestone/firestone, and Continental (Only because I had a set go over 100K miles with decent tread) In that order.

I am a Michelin man, but they don't make an agressive all terrain tire, so I get BFG's for my trucks. I will never give Good year another dime, to many seperated tires under the bridge, and General is good enough for a beater, but will never be on a car I take pride in. Heck if I just want BFG type Tread for Cheap, Get Trailmark Radial APR's! LOL I got them on my GMC and they are the exact tread design as BFG's, but I paid $40 a tire for 235/75r15! Of course has 1500 miles on it in 8 months of ownership, so I am sure these tries will rot before they wear out.



HEre is the APR! I tell you put them next to a BFG and it is almost the same tread!

well for what the generals cost, if they even last 50K miles your still ahead, since it cost u half as much as the bfgs. with that said, if you paid 2x as much as u paid for the generals, for the bfg's then by the time u got to 100K miles theyd be bald as slicks. point is, even if they last only 50K miles, u can buy another set for another 50K miles and have a new tire, where ur bfgs, that u paid 2x as much for, generally last between 60-80K miles... your not really 'getting ahead'

their cheap cause theres no demand for them. the original grabbers were 100% garbage, and general has sour rep from the 70's and 80's. I have about 5,000 miles on mine, and they look brand spankin new.

 

Ok heres my experience with the Revos vs the BFG AT:

A couple years ago we had a[RF] meet at Stoddard Wells out here. I had ~32 BFG ATs and Jacob(TheForce02) had ~31 Revos. Both of us have 3.0s open rear end, and with his 3" lift he sat equally as high as my stock edge. On the trails i was having a muh easier time getting up hills and much less slippage/spin overall. That and the revos just dont look that "mean" imo.

I dont know anything about the discover s/t so i cant comment there, but with the 50+ off-road trips ive been out on ive never seen a better tire then the BFG AT (same goes for onroad driving)
