i have recently bought some used 33 inch tires and rims, slapped them on my truck and when i took them for a test drive i was horrified. my truck feels like its moving up and down while moving, and vibrates very violently i took the tires off to check if they were balanced...but i did not see any weights on the rim sides. theres is some rows of what seems to be weights on the inside of the rim but are they for balancing? if thats the case why are the tires act so violently? can a bad alignment be the problem? worn ball joints on the front?


somebody please throw out some ideas

 

go get them balanced... those things on the inside sound like weights but the person you got them from probably swapped tires and rims and never got them rebalanced...

 

Yeah, 33's are a PITA to balance... i took mine to 5 different places... and finally the other day i did it myself at work....

Found out the other places used the WRONG weights on it, one wheel had NO weights on it.. and the machine called for 5oz

 

You could get those beads, but never had any experience with them myself

 

go get a balance and problem solved

yes, it will wear badly and will wear out parts on your truck

 

Are the tires cupped at all? You could also have an out of round tire. Take it to a tire shop and ask them if they have a road force balancer.

 

road force is a hoax, i worked for discount tire for a few years, we always laughed when they wanted "road Force" and were willing to pay for it, if the tire shop has fairly new high tech balancers they are setup with sonar equipment that will notice imperfections without even touching the tire through a standard balancing procedure, they problem lies in if the Technitian will actually tell you that something is wrong or if he is in a pissy mood for having to balance dirty 33's

 

whats so hard about balancing 33s?

 

just put bbs in your tires they will balance themselves.

i have heard that those BBs and alike do not work to well on 33s or even 35s but larger tires they work awesome in.

i know some people running golf *****.

btw i think yomie is right on, it has to do with the person balancing the tire / running the machine.

i take all my tires to this hole in the wall shop and they do awesome work, they balanced my 35s perfectly and it took them well over a hour just to get it perfect.

 

Guess im going to ship my next set to you to take them to that shop. My 33s are close but not perfect

 

It is honestly almost impossible to get a 33 or larger 'perfect' alot of shops will do a static balance on something that large, but a dynamic balance will ride smoother but takes the technitian longer, thus him loosing money (being paid flat-rate) At Discount Tire as an ASST MGR i was on Salary, so i had all the time in the world

Static Balancing - uses a single weight plane and only address "up-and-down" imbalance. This is simply not adequate for today's vibration sensitive vehicles. (weights on only ONE side of the wheel, or in the center of the wheel)

Dynamic Balancing - uses two weight planes. This eliminates "up-and-down" and "side-to-side" imbalance. Dynamic, two plane balancing should always be requested, even on custom wheels when hidden weights are required. (weights on 2 planes or on 2 different sides of the wheel)

If you are running a wide wheel(Deep Dish style 10") and do not want weights visible on the outside you may not be able to get a dynamic balance depending on the offset of the wheel, it may not be efficient. If you do not mind the weights being visible on the outside, you will get a smooth ride

 

did you ever deal with balancing MTRs?

all 6 of mine balanced out great with static balance. and another member here got some MTRs and his balanced out really well as well.

might just be luck but perfect to me is in the ride and mine ride smooth.

another thing investing in an old fashion manual balancer was the best thing i did. my tires are like glass with that thing

 

My 37" and 35" MTR's balanced really well, i even had my 37's balanced dynamically with only like 2oz. MTR's balance MUCH better than BFG's. I had my old BFG's balanced statically and one called for 10oz. I hated balancing BFG's, i would balance MTR's all day long, no sweat! Nitto's balanced really well also. I never saw a Nitto or MTR with a OOR (Out of Round) condition, but BFG's were horrible about OOR.

 

i no longer have weights on the front MTR's (knocked them all off on the rocks) and i dont' work for discount tire anymore, and i still do not get any vibes from them, but i don't drive over 55mph

 

BTW, i will no longer buy another set of BFG's ever after working there, even though they are owned by Michelin

034x4's 38's on beadlocks not balanced rode smoother than my BFG MT's. And i do have a 'glass a$$' <--(what we call people that are always coming back for re-balances)

as far as a DD street only vehicle, you can't get anything better than a Michelin

 

great idea. i always ask if the tire shop does "roadforce" balancing. since i've got 32's and steel wheels, it was hard to balance them properly. but with roadforce balancing, the driving is now smoooth!

 

are bfg ats hard to balance? mine are like a 33 inch tire.

i had an alignment 3 months ago after replaceing my tie rod ends. which cupped my tires on my vehicle now and go to new tires will they cup?
