There should be a code on your door sticker near the stock tire size...see here to decipher the code: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Axles.html
4) FX4 Rangers 99-current come equipped with an 8.8 rear and 31-spline axles with either 4.10 or 4.56 axle ratios.

The FX4 wasn't introduced until 2002. In that year it was essentially a FX4 Level II that's 2003+. It had a 31-spline axle with 4.10 or 4.56 ratio. The 4.56 was incredibly rare but was offered for a few years.
Being that you have an 06 FX4, you most definitely have 4.10 gears. They weren't offered with anything higher than that. That's easily checked by looking at a small tag on the rear axle pumpkin.
As far as if it'll ruin your transmission or rear end, it won't. Many many Ranger owners have run this setup without any problems whatsoever.
Sounds to me like your cousin has the jealousy bug.

Go to www.lapointauto.com Click search and then put that you have a 2003 Ranger and you're looking for a Rear Axle Assm (RWD). The very bottom option is 8.8" ring gear, 10" brakes, 4.56 ratio.
Try this website too. http://www.airportautopartsinc.com/

All are reputable local salvage yards but that's a national parts lookup system that is employed by many salvage yards.
The Ranger Station has the same information. Axle code R8 or 98.

I've got an 02 FX4 on 33's with 4.10's and an auto tranny with *gasp*166,5XX miles on it. I'll tell you this, flatground, it'll run like a champ, go to climb any hill, and you're gunna loose speed due to being under geared. Now, the flip side to that is I have a buddy who has a 95 STX with 4.56's and he claims he's running almost too steep a gear, so there really isn't a good middle ground on gearing with 33's.
