Uh-Oh, Check Engine light
#1
Just got a check engine light last night. I need to know where i can get the codes pulled for free. But in the mean time i would like to know if there is anything that i could do to fix it.
Oh, also, yesterday while i was painting my bumper, i occasionally started it up and moved it and after shutting off the engine i could hear a noise and it sounded like something was draining, and it would stop after like 10 seconds. And this was before i took it on I-95 (when i got the check engine light). But now i cannot hear the noise anymore.
Thank you,
Phil

Actually the draining is probably the coolant draining from the radiator to the resevoir. Happens all the time.
You might try just disconnecting the battery to reset your computer. That should also clear any codes, and if they come back, then you know there is something wrong.
Edit: It may take an hour or so to clear/reset the computer.
You're probably due for a O2 sensor.

My light came on the other day and I ran by Autozone to get it pulled. IT came back as a faulty fuel tank valve. They guy said he never heard of that before and told me to check my gas cap. he reset the code and the light went off. I drove the truck for 2 more days and it came back on.
Im not sure if this matters, but I cannot set the gas pump to fill my tank as it shuts off. I have to pump the gas real slow in order to fill it. Is there another valve that I need to check/replace?? Is anyone else having this problem at the pump??

Something to think about
Most of the guys at autozone are not mechanics. They sell parts. They read the engine light for free but thats not always a full diagnostic. Alot of people seem to think auto zone people are full service techs. MOST are not. I work at an auto zone Iknow. While I have learned alot from experience people dont realize we sell parts not fix cars.

The link is not working for your thermostat fix. I replaced the gas cap and reset the computer, and it stayed off for several weeks and then came back on. I went by the dealer today and they printed off the TSB for it. If a new gas cap does not fix the problem, what is the next item to look at?

theres a vent valve built into the fuel pump on the top of the housing, its pretty common for this to go bad on rangers.
