Knocking noise

i have a 2011 Ranger with the 4 cylinder engine. It has only 25K miles and runs fine. The only problem is when I idle at a stop sign I hear a knocking noise. Kinda sounds like a diesel engine idleing. I don’t seem to hear anything while driving, only while stopped. If I open the hood and I don’t hear anything but if I stick my head under the front of the car I can hear the noise. Any ideas? Possibly an exhaust system leak?

Your right. It’s a 2.3L.

Well since the vehicle is a 2011 and I'm sure you're smart enough to keep the oil full and changed regularly. I'm going to rule out a spun crank bearing.

My guess is you have a misfire.

my guess without seeing it...
one of your spark plugs isn't burning all the fuel at idle.

when was the last time you changed the plugs?

also does the engine shake when it's making that noise?
