nasty sounding acceleration
 

This has been bugging me for awhile. When I accelerate, my truck moves decently, but my engine has this nasty, rattling sound, it doesn't sound smooth at all. It's not a pinging-type sound at all though, it's not the timing. I've replaced the PCV valve, just got brand new spark plugs, I cleaned my K&N, all my emission stuff has been replaced or repaired. What could be causing this sound? Is it the EGR valve, or maybe the MAF sensor? It's coming from the front of the vehicle so I know it's not the muffler, which is still doing quite well.

turn engine on and go under the hood and open the throttle up, then locate where its coming from and report back, that will helps us a lot more.

it could be the catalytic converter coming apart on the inside. they tend to rattle when they do.

I have the 4.0 and I notice sometimes when acceleration I hear what you're talking about. Mine sounds like rattling rocks in a metal pan or something like that. It's only sometimes though. It'll either rattle on the trip or it won't. Mine isn't really loud but you can hear it.

I have that on my 4.0 as well. I find it only does when the engine is cold and when I'm accelerating somewhat hard with RPM above 2500. No idea what it is but I agree it is annoying.

Well, to answer one thing: I just put in a brand new cat converter and O2 sensors (cuz my O2's were stuck in my old one and i couldn't get them out so i just put in a new one with the new O2's i got)

I opened up the hood and had someone step on the gas, to me it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side of the engine, by the air intake/frion tank/left of the two ignition coils. From the inside of the cab, where I first heard it it's also coming from the passenger side of the engine, and it's heavily audible under the glove box area. If I can do anything else to help diagnose, let me know.

you guys with the 4.0 sohc motor have the timing chain rattle. If you motor sounds like a heavy spark knock between 2500-3000 rpm and is most pronounced when its cold, thats it.

There is a TSB that addresses the issue.

So...what about the guy with the 2.3L motor that started the posted and asked the original question lol. :)

hmm...okay i'll check that. No valves are a possibility?

you mean like EGR valve? Probably the only thing that could make that noise on the passenger side would be the EGR tube having a hole or crack.

i was lookin at my exhaust .. (i have a 4.0,,a bit different..) and i hear the same sound ,, but when i was lookin at my exhaust i noticed that all the muffler guard welds had failed in like a couple of spots... and when my truck runs they rattle real bad... maybe check around under your truck... but other than tht IDK>..just givin some info...

for the 2.3 it sounds like detonation/spark knock. Whats the condition of the spark plugs and fuel filter? If the MAF has never been cleaned it is definitly worth cleaning it anyway no matter what else you do. You most likely have some carbon build up somewhere, either in the cylinders themselves or in the EGR port in the intake manifold blocking some or all of the EGR flow.

The sparks are brand new, fuel filter has been changed lately, MAF has never been cleaned, How would I clean the carbon build up in the cylinders or in the EGR port/intake manifold.

IF you have carbon build up in the EGR port in the intake manifold you would have to take th eegr off and the upper intake manifold off and then use a 1/2 inch drill bit and just clean the carbon out with that. The port in the intake manifold should be a full 1/2 inch port all the way through. An easy way to just check it is to pull off the egr valve and use a finger to check the port and make sure it is clear all the way in and full size. For carbon in the cylinders some good fuel injector cleaner can work somewhat, and carefully useing seafoam through a vacuum line can also help out.

So I looked into this a little more, cleaned the MAF/IAC, that didn't fix it. But, I had a light on under my hood, and I noticed there was steam/smoke coming out of inbetween the middle two pipes on the exhaust manifold, right where they meet to go into the single pipe, how can I test if the manifold is cracked for sure? The smoke stopped after the engine ran idling for awhile.
