P1443 DTC Help!!!
 

Hey guys my check engine light recently came on and it pulled the P1443 code from the OBDII sensor. Anyways, I have been doing a lot of research about this code and have read many different ways about fixing this problem. I bought a brand new gas cap last night and am going to wait a few days to see if the code clears itself. Other than that, it looks like I may need a new charcoal canister, purge flow sensor, solenoid valve, and hoses. Does anyone know if these parts come as one complete assembly???? My last question is has anyone installed these new parts and is it difficult??? Can anyone tell me exactly how to do it? It doesnt look like it is rocket science but was just wondering if it is difficult. Thanks guys, any input would be much appreciated

P1443 is fairly common on 95~97 Rangers. It is usually caused by split evap hoses or a bad Purge Flow Sensor. The PFS comes as part of a ~$100 assembly but does not include the carbon canister. The parts are by the canister which is near the DS headlight area.

I've actually gone through replacing all of these parts on my 97 Ranger as I have the same code. The charcoal canister is an easy swap. Same for the purge valves.

Shouldn't have any problems. I got the canister on EBay for $75, and the first valve for $45 and the second smaller valve for $20. Don't know if these are the best prices, but, just wanted to offer that as well.

Thanks for the responses guys. I went to the Ford dealer yesterday and spoke with the manager of the parts department. He said unless you see a change is the way the truck performs, you dont need to worry about it. The only thing he said the faulty valve is hurting is the environment because the canister/sensor/valve assembly filters the gas fumes and it will not be doing so very efficiently with the faulty valve. So he said dont worry about it!

Yeah, but you should replace it, the light will stay on and it says in the owner's manual it impairs engine performance. I replaced it all cuz my truck was running for crap, and I'll probably get crapped on for saying this but you shouldn't just let it fly b/c it's hurting the environment and not you.

a bad gas cap can throw that code as well...but after replaciing mine the code was still there so i replaced the evap solenoid and purge valve. .. code went away for good.

Here's another reason to repair it. When you have a CEL for one problem and choose to ignore it because you think it is unimportant, another more serious problem could come along and you wouldn't even know it. You only have one CEL - no matter how many fault codes are stored in the PCM.

It can and will impair engine performance. At the same time that a properly-operating EVAP system is delivering fuel vapors into the upper intake to be burned in the combustion chambers (usually at warm cruise), the PCM is programmed to provide shorter fuel injector pulse times (widths) to compensate for the resultant less oxygen.

So it's not as if the rest of the engine control system isn't being affected by a bad EVAP system.

All valid points, and all a great collection of reasons to repair it. It's not a costly thing that will save you alot of hassle in the future, especially what rwenzing said about you only have one MIL, if it's on, it's on, and you don't know if anything else has gone wrong.

ALSO - If you replace the parts and the light is still on, even if you clear it (and it comes back on), give the truck some time. Drive it for a bit. Mine took about a week to stop showing up. It may not be the case with every Ranger but it's always a possibility. :)
