Quick clarification on the 5R55E vs 5R44E
Hello Hello all,
I've been trying to do my research on the 2 transmissions and just wanted to make sure I understand the difference. Mainly the 110ft/lb torque difference and that the 55E is for the 4.0l (which can be used in the 2.3l as well). So if I have the 2.3l, it's safe to assume I could go with either one if I was replacing my current trans. Thanks! 2010 XL 2.3L 4x2 Automatic Transmission |
Welcome to the forum
Yes, the 55E has a slightly larger OD drum and extra bolt hole on bell house for 4.0l's higher torque The bell housings are of course specific to the engine so all the 5R55Es will only have 4.0l bell housings The 5R44Es can have either the 3.0l Vulcan bell housing or the 2.3l Duratec bell housing Bell housings are not easy to swap since the back side of bell housing is the front side of the main pump inside the transmission Google: 4R44E Pump Alignment Without Special Tool Short video on whats behind the bell housing, 4R and 5R are the same transmissions, the "5th gear" is actually IN the computer, not the transmission, lol But the bell housings are interchangeable as far as the transmission side goes And all the wiring is the same for 2001-2011 5R models And of course 2WD or 4x4 transmissions are different, no conversion possible without full disassembly to change the main shaft |
