Rev Question

Hi everyone ,
I have a 1998 2.5 L I4 Ranger. I have just broken 70 k miles on it and brought up to my dad how I am unable to rev above 3000 rpms while driving. The engine will rev up to 3000 rpm then shift up up and when in the final gear it won't rev up anymore it will constantly accelerate to 60, maybe a max of 65 maybe even 70 but slowly and without going above 2500 rpms. I have replaced the spark plugs, plug wires, egr valve, egr tube, egr sensor, and new fuel filter, along with other new parts. Such as 15" rims and 32's, new alternator, suspension, and other parts here and there. I am just wondering if there is something wrong with my truck not being able to go above 3000 rpms because I can't figure out what it is. Hoping someone might have some ideas.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum

Computers have REV limiters to prevent run away engines
REV Limiter in Engaged when an Automatic is in Park or Neutral, or the clutch pedal is down on a Manual trans.

Automatics have a DTR(digital transmission range) sensor on the shift rod on the transmission linkage.
It tells the computer if trans is in Park or Neutral, Ford truck column shifters can get loose, so transmission goes into Drive but DTR is still telling computer Neutral.
Try 3
And could be DTR is broken, always showing Neutral but long shot

DTR also is what allows engine to start, if DTR isn't telling computer Park or Neutral the starter motor will not work.
So for a quick test, engine off, shift into DRIVE and with foot HARD on the brakes, see if starter motor works, if it does then REV limiter would also be engaged

Thank you. Took a look at the DTR sensor and the lines line up for when in neutral. And tried the start test but the truck stayed as dead as a door-nail when I tried to start it in drive. That rules out one piece. Thank you for the suggestion.
