Running to rich

Need help 2010 ranger 2.3l is runng to rich. Have replaced coil pack, spark plugs, map, idler control valve and cleaned the maf. It has low rpm when it starts up have to give it a little gas to raise rpm.

Welcome to the forum

Need exact code(s)

What about O2 sensor?

Low RPMs at cold start may be CHT sensor, it tells computer engine temp, but should set a code when it starts to go bad

Thank you No codes replaced cat and both o2. Have went thru 3 sets of spark plugs in less then a thousand miles.

Then it's probably a bad computer

Have you try to set codes?

I.e. unplug MAF sensor and drive, see if it set MAF code
Try a few different sensors, one at a time

If it sets a maf code then bad maf sensor? I did started up with maf unplugged for under a minute no code. How long should i drive for? I will replace the cht sensor the truck has 147k on it. Thank you for your help on this.

Unplugging the sensors and to see if computer sets a code is a "sanity test" for the computer, not a sensor test

If computer is not "seeing" that a sensor is unplugged or not working then computer is bad, so no matter what you change on the outside it wouldn't matter, computer is what controls the whole system

Computer should see MAF sensor unplugged instantly, should have got the CEL within 10 seconds or faster after startup
Try unplugging other sensors, one at a time, plug MAF back in

Thank you for your help, I did what you said, it was very hard to start and the check engine light come on immediately. Does this mean I need a new maf senor? Also the check engine light is still on after i plugged back in.

No, MAF sensor should be fine

CEL will go off on its own after a short drive

I would see if you can get codes read now, write them down, should be MAF sensor code off course, but now you know computer is most likely OK there may be other history codes.

Computer remembers codes for several weeks or months, but CEL doesn't come on, that's only for active codes

P0113 code 2 on it on was stored. The other i did to day unplugged the maf senor. I replaced the maf sensor, also looked up the part number. It looks like the old part is for a 4.0 not a 2.3l. The part number is 3L3A-12B579-BA. It starts up a lot faster and it idles at 800 instead of a 1000.

Larger throat on MAF sensor could cause the issue
MAF sensor only samples 10-15% of the air flowing in, the computer is programmed with that %
So if you change the throat size of the MAF that changes the %
Except computer doesn't know you changed it.............................

Thank you for your help. The truck is running great. Do you know what type seats i can put into it. I need to change them out.

RonD Sep 1, 2020 09:20 AM

Did you find the specific problem?

For seats try car-part.com

For 2010 you need seats that have the weight sensors for the restraint system(SRS) but should be fine with 2004-2011
You can use bucket or 60/40 which ever you prefer

Adrapck Sep 1, 2020 09:52 AM

It was the air flow mass sensor. The truck strats up better and has more power. I'm looking at getting explore seat out of the junk yard. I will look for 04 to 11 like you said i hope there is no mods to do on it. Thank you for all your help.
