Exhaust questions...

I want to leave the stock muffler but make the truck louder. Someone said cut the piping off like a few inches past the muffler. I was planning on just adding a Flowmaster 40 Series too it, but someone said that would just make it quiter with the stock muffler. Any suggestions?

Just keep the stock muffler after you cut it off....you can always get it welded back on...

Go flows

Well I wanted the look of the flow, and a LITTLE louder but not loud. Ohwell I will just cut the stock piping off after the muffler, prolly be loud enough.

A muffler does just that...it muffles the noise. Adding an additional muffler will make the truck quieter and restrict the exhaust more. I don't see where you would put one anyway.

Cutting the pipe won't do much either.

I'd just have a new muffler put in place of the stock one. It won't hurt anything, and assuming you leave the cat and O2 sensors alone, it won't cause the truck to fail emissions or anything.

You could try un-bolting the stock muffler and gutting the cat in front of it, and get a turndown after the stock muffler. But i doubt it will make it very noticeable louder.

That's far more illegal than removing the muffler.

why wont your dad let you do it. exhaust just makes the truck run better/perform better/more gas mileage + it sounds better and stronger. that doesnt even make sense. im positive cutting off the exhaust will lower resale more than a new exhaust system from muffler back.

I just think he should know the legality of gutting the cat. Maybe someone doesn't want to do something that they could be fined thousands for. Yeah, I know "you probably won't get caught," but it's still illegal and pretty pointless.

In many places a vehicle will fail a state inspection if there is no muffler or it is damaged...so depending on where you live it might be illegal, but like I said, not nearly as illegal as gutting the cat (a federal offense).

They are that way from the factory though....that's different (like a diesel with no cats). I work at a place that does state inspections...if a car has a damaged muffler or is missing a muffler (and it was originally equipped with one), it doesn't pass.

Question: Are there any Cat Deletes for 97 Rangers or will I have to "fabricate" my own?
