Timing Problem

  1. Timing belt broke,
  2. Tore down and replaced timing belt per YouTube videos,
  3. Set timing as instructed,
  4. Put back together,
  5. Started engine, it ran for a few seconds, then it killed, and would not crank again
  6. Pulled back down and confirmed timing is correctly set
What should I do next?

Thanks! Jim

Welcome to the forum

Always include Rangers year and engine size in each new thread

With any engine if the starter motor works, i.e. engine turns over, but engine does not start up then you do 50/50 test

Spray gasoline or starting fluid(ether) into the intake, then try to start
If it starts up and then dies, fuel is the problem

If it doesn't start up then spark is the problem

50/50 instant diagnosis

It reads like you still had fuel and pressure in the fuel rail for first startup, you should, fuel system holds pressure for months and months
But after startup fuel was used up and not replaced
So fuel pump may not be coming on

Year would be helpful to diagnose that
