Two Fans!?
After I got done doing the yard work of laying fresh mulch in our back yard, I washed out my truck box, and gave the Ranger a bath while I was at it.
When I got done, I pop the hood open to study the enegin some more, and I noticed there was an electric fan in front of my belt driven fan..... What is up with that? Also I noticed that the air filter is going to be a royal pain to replace since it's burried under the A/C hose! |
Bet ya it turns on with the AC

Air filter is easy to change. You undo two clips and the box open.
Not sure about the electric fan. |

Not sure about the electric fan. As for the fan will try the A/C and see if that fan kicks on or not. Wonder why two tho? The belt driven one should take care of it. |
Not if the engine isn't warmed up. The belt driven fan has a thermal clutch that doesn't really kick the fan up to "full power" until it gets warm.

Engine looks like this right?
http://img-96.carmax.com/Images/1/96...5-dfe84959.jpg 2 clips on the tube side of the box and then you pull ap a bit then pull away from the fender. You can pull the intake tube to make it a little easier. |
Yes, the same lay out, but as you see in my photo, the A/C line is right on top/front of the housing, and I would have to force the hose out of the way.. To me that's a leak waiting to happen to the house over time.

that would be the duratec 2.3 motor
came with a clutch fan and an electric fan and yeah, the line is rang stupid, just be careful |
When did Ford start doing this two fan? (I've seen posting about adding E-fan on here)
In my old '93, it didn't have two fan.. Just the regular belt fan, and never had trouble with the A/C. |

In my old '93, it didn't have two fan.. Just the regular belt fan, and never had trouble with the A/C. the dual fan ONLY came on the 20001.5+ duratec motors the older 2.3 were lima's, and had only a clutch fan |
quick word of advice with the airfilter be VERY carefull removing the airbox lid and reinstalling it my truck is set up the same way when i did the first oil change i checked the filter and replaced the lid and went on my merry way few days later my truck stated stalling out sent it in to mazda my mass air flow sensor was out caused by my air filter ripping during reinstallation of the box it was my fault but they still fixed it under warrenty
and i noticed the duel fan set up on my truck the other day i was woundering the samething |
2 fans here... and if you release the little push clip at the radiator, attached to the overflow hose, it makes the filter change easier. I just have a buddy hold the AC hose up out of the way while I ease the filter in and out.
|
2 fans are found on all the Duratech 2.3 motors. And the hoses, well, just move them and be careful when putting it all back together. Be sure the tabs at the back of the air box are engaged before you put the clips on the front.
