I recently picked up a Ranger pretty cheap that had a few issues. Most were small issues that were fixed easily but there is one other issue I am having.

When I am driving at normal speeds everything works great. But when I come to a stop the truck almost dies and the oil pressure gauge jumps around, has only actually died twice but sounds like it will everytime and then manages to come back before dying. It is way worse when the AC is turned on.

Plugs and wires were just changed. Was looking into changing fuel filter tomorrow since I am not sure the last time it was changed. From some reading I am thinking maybe IAC?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

 

My truck died 6 times three days ago when i was going and coming to and from the gym. . . it turned out to be a really dirty fuel filter.

 

Thanks for the info 00Ranger. Also I forgot to add my truck threw a CEL Friday. I checked it and it is 192: Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Low Input. But it went back off today.

I have done alot of reading and searching online today and yesterday and I think I have come down to the following:

1. Replace fuel filter, cheap and easy. Then test.
2. Also I am going to try unplugging the IAC and see if the truck stalls, if it keeps running I believe this means the IAC is bad.
3. If it is not the IAC, I am thinking a replacement fuel pump. From what I can tell since the 99 ranger is return less and the regulator is built into the pump so a fuel pump replacement seems like the next viable option. (If that's the case, which is a better option: drop the tank or pull the bed? Dam, shouldn't filled up with gas today. )

These are just things I have gathered from some serious searching, but I am no mechanic by any means, so if anyone has some other tips first....Please chime in.

Also There is a what appears to be a vacuum hose under the hood that is not connected to anything, it is plugged but just in there. My buddy that is a mechanic said he wasn't sure but he had recalled seeing another ranger like that with that random line going to nowhere.

 

THe line that is going to nowhere is probably a Line (electrical?) that was for a factory option that your truck doesnt have..

My truck when i first got it did the same tihng, ended up needing a new fuel filter

 

I replaced the fuel filter this morning. I think it was bad cause when I poured the gas out the backside of it, it was murky. The new fuel filter seemed to help a bit but did not fix the issue. I tried unplugging the IAC and the first time it stalled, the second time it stayed on for a while just barely. Removed the IAC and cleaned it, reinstalled, didn't really help. Air filter looks brand new. I turned the idle up slightly and that helps it a bit but that is not really a fix so much as a temporary band aid. Any advice guys? Also the check engine light went off, so I am guessing that was just the fuel filter. Should I get a fuel pressure test gauge and see what the pressure is coming of the line? Thanks in advance for any help.
