04 With oil leak!
 

I have a new problem on my hands now! I have an oil leak! I seen a small drop on the floor, and I got under the truck and sure enough it looks like a slow leak possibly coming from the rear main, cant tell for sure though. You can see the front of the pan is damp and it leads up between the trans and engine. I am NOT happy! A truck this new should NOT be leaking ANY oil! I don't know what to do, I really cant take it apart to fix it right now... Warrenty is over. Any suggestions?

Mike - When did you get your oil changed last? Is it possible it could be something as simple as your filter leaking? I had that problem once with my wife's truck, freaked out a little only to find the filter wasn't tight enough.

yeah check your filter because i took mine to ford and i thought the same thing and sure enough they just didnt tighten the filter all the way

Filter is nice and tight, my dad blames it on me using full synthetic oil saying its leaking thorugh the seals blah blah, I don't think that's it but you never know. Actaully now that I think black, when I bought the truck I was using motorcraft 5w20 synblend, and the previous owner was using synblend oil to, but a different brand. When I started using my fullsyn mobil 1 the oil seemd low when I changed it, and I thought the engine could of been consuming it. I guess it was this leak the whole time. Im just not sure what I should do at this point. Could it really be the mobil 1 easing its way past the seals?

did you do the oil and filter change yourself? Take off the filter and make sure you only have 1 seal on there. Sometimes an old seal can get stuck and when you have two on it leaks inbetween the two

or possibly your screw at the bottom of your oil pan is loose. Jiffylube always does that with mine and I have to tighten it at home

Yeah I do it myself, its only got one seal on the filter, because I always wipe off the block before I put the new one on. Plug is tight. You can tell its coming from above. Ive talked to several people today, and did some reasearching and found others have had problems with mobil1 causing seal leaks in some vehicles, and people have switched it out for something else and the leaks would stop after a bit. I may try that... Good looking truck btw..

thats interesting, I've never heard of certain oil brands leaking...but I suppose its possible

No problem. I took the mobil1 out and went about bought a new filter and 5 quarts of motorcraft 5w20 synblend, what it calls for from the factory. It wasnt leaking when I had that in there before, so we'll see what happens this time. My grandpa was telling me that my grandma had a brand new s10 years ago, and put synthetic mobil 1 in, and it started leaking after the first couple changes. He took it back out and put castrol back in, and the leak went away. Intresting...

Let us know if that stops it. I haven't heard of that before.

Well guys, its been about 3k miles and it's still dry underneith and just a tad above full, same spot it was when I changed it. Im really happy. I used to see a drip everyday even after cleaning it off underneith, havent seen one since the oil change. Im sticking with what it says to use.

That right there amazes me. I am dumbfounded by this. Someone needs to explain why a certain oil would cause a leak.

I've been using Mobil1 5w30 and MC filter for 50K miles and 4 years, changing every 7K miles average. My truck is bone dry, it don't leak oil and it never has. I too would be interested in knowing more about this. -Mike-

I bought the truck in may of 06. Never had a problem with oil consumption until after i started using the full synthetic mobil 1 on like the third oil change I did on the truck. I did everything the same when I changed the oil this past time except for the motorcraft 5w20 I have in there now, which is what I used when I first bought the truck. Ive always had the filter and plug tight. Like I said, the leak was coming from far up like between the engine and transmission. I havent seen anything, and its right up on full where it should be about 3k later. Normally it would of used/leaked some by now.

a vehicle that's been using regular oil for sometime and then switching over to synthetic will cause it to consume some oil, that's normal until the engines internals are cleaned out. Ring packs, heads, main bearings etc...

Why the leak happened in your case, I don't know the full story. Why switching to a synthetic would cause it. -Mike-

Yes but I started using it at like around 23k, I have changed back at 41k and all is well so far. Also, I had a leak, the engine itself wasnt consuming it.

what ever the factory recomends for it, thats always the best bet on anything. Kind of why they put it in the manual.. lol

Glad you got it stopped. If i could get my mustang to stop like that, i too would be happy (rear main is bad) :spam:

that is what i run is the full synthetic mobil one. i am starting to see oil consumption. maybe i will switch to another brand like castrol.
the only reason i went to mobil one is that you can run it for 15k. i run 2000 miles a month. was just trying to save money.

I do about 1400 miles a month for work, so in my case synthetic makes sense. I don't see any other advantages of it other than longer drain intervals. Regular oil will do just as good in all respects in a daily driver under normal conditions with 4-5000 mile changes.

I'm sure M1 could hold up for 15K but I just don't have the balls for it. -Mike-

I'll do mine between 3k-5k. The oil still looks really good right now after about 3k, so I may just go on to 5k.

i really don't like m1 it seems to be thinner to me the oil that i really like is castrol syntech it seems to hold up better then m1. i have seen i alot of oil since that is my job as a lube tech an all of the castrol product don't seem to break down like other oils an for motorcaft oil who even makes it ?

Hey, I have thought about trying syntec. Do you have any experience with valvolines synpower?

no i have never tried or heard anything about it valvoline is an ok oil i still thank that syntec is the best way to go. my next oil change will be castrol syntech 5w20

I have the same little oil leak and I use mobile1 full sythn. In fact I've had it for quite some time. Maybe on my next change I'll switch and see if the leak stops.

Oh, and I have used mobil1 full synth since after my second oil change in the truck. (i have owned it since new)

edit: mj550, I see youre in Cinci. I bought my truck in Dayton (miamisburg) when I lived in Ohio :)

If you do try it, let us know what kind of oil you use to replace it. If you want to stay synthetic then just pick a different brand. Id say definatly try it though, or heck throw in some motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend that is used from the factory and see if it stops. If it works, then that will definatly suggest something. Keep us posted.
