1998 park and reverse problems

I bought a cheap Ranger and it came with problems(hence the cheapness). When its in Park it wont stop stay still, it goes back. When it is on Reverse it wont move, almost like if it was in neutral. When its in Neutral it goes forward and when I put it in Drive it will accelerate but it wont like shift gears. Im a rookie in all of this so i dont have any experience at all. Anyone knows what might be the problem?

Google: ford truck column shifter loose

This is a very common issue on all Ford truck column shifters.

Now yours could be different, but you at least should watch a few of the videos to see how the shifter works at the column end.
I have also seen the cable sheath break where it bends in the engine compartment to go back to the transmission.

When you move the shift lever it pulls or pushes a cable inside a sheath, this pulls or pushes the shift linkage on the side of the transmission.
If the sheath breaks it in effect shortens the range of movement that the cable has.

If you have ever seen, or worked on, a cable brake on a bicycle it is the same principle, outer sheath sets range.
