1999 3.0 VIN "V" ID question
 

Long story but I'd like to know if the vehicle VIN is stamped anywhere on the 3.0 V6 engine. I bought a used engine for my 99 and the engine is not as it was represented. For starters, some or all of it is from a 2000 Ranger.
I've looked about everywhere I con thin k of for the VIN. Lots of single numbers and letters which I guess are inspection marks but no VIN.
I thought it was a Federal Regulation that the VIN or part of it be located on major drivetrain components since 1969. Anyone know?

AFAIK, there is no vin stamping on the engine, they were shipped with a tag but its possible that fell off

Today I pulled the intake and heads on the donor engine. Also *tried* tp [ul the timing cover. A couple of bolts broke off. Not good.
Anyway, I have yet to see a full or partial VIN on this engine.
I do, however, see coded casting dates that tell me it is a 2000 MY engine.

The difference between the two is the fuel injectors - one has the fat grey ones is for the trucks with the flex fuel, and the other is straight fuel.

I'm surprised to hear that. According to the 99 Ranger sales brochure all of the 3.0 engine were flex fuel from the start of production (which would have been late 1998). Something changed in late July of 99.
I will look closely at the old engine after I remove it. Not much happening on the project until a bunch of gaskets and new head bolts arrive later today.
I am now 100% sure that the entire used engine I got is from an early production 2000 MY Ranger. The cylinder heads and block carry late November and early December 1999 casting dates.

Gaskets and head bolts arrived! Time to get to work. Yesterday I spent an hour with an acetylene torch removing 3 broken off exhaust manifold bolts. Those suckers were REALLY stuck!

Update: I can say with confidence that the 3.0 does not have the VIN stamped anywhere on it. I thoroughly examined the cooked mid-year 99 engine and the replacement early production 2000. Had the heads, timing cover, and oil pan off both. No VIN or even partial VIN. That surprises me.
The new to me Ranger II, called that because it is the second jalapeno green 99 XLT in the family fleet, is now on the road. The cooked 3.0 with about 225k miles was pulled and scrapped. I did save a few parts like the upper intake manifold with throttle body, lower intake manifold with injectors, and the oil pan. The replacement 3.0 was refreshed with new timing chain and sprockets, gaskets, plugs, and ignition cables. It runs great.
My son removed the seats and carpeting and did a deep cleaning. I bought a set of wheel center off ebay and also the floor console with the PO just had to take with him for some reason. I installed four new tires last week and charged the A/C. The main issue bugging me is inop power locks. The fuse is pulled and when you install one things get goofy. I'll start anouther thread on that issue because it's a doozy. Here she is in all her green glory.
