Whipple vs 4.0SOHC

I need more power outta my truck, for about the same amount of money i could find a wrecked 4.0 ranger and part it out from what i need and sell whatevers good and still be ahead of supercharger, as far as reliability is concerned. Anybody know of a good info site on the 4.0SOHC?

You will need to find a donor with a good transmission, too. The 3.0 transmission case won't bolt to a 4.0L and both 4.0L transmissions are rated for higher torque.

Also, you will need to swap the PCM, engine/trans wiring harness and Y-pipe. In all likelihood, your 02 Edge already has an 8.8 axle that you will need to handle the output of the 4.0L.

The most logical donor would be a 2002 but a 2001~2003 should be very compatible. 2003's have no EGR which is a reliablility plus, IMO. Supposedly, the 2003-up have the tensioner problem completely fixed ... The 2004+ have wiring and intake differences but could be adapted if necessary.

I've been weighing this same choice myself. The 4.0 gets terrible fuel milage, but the whipple dictates high-octane fuel. The dark-horse 3rd candidate is a 5.0 swap. That would afford me more power than a 4.0, with fuel economy comparable to a mildly modded 3.0, but the initial expense and difficulty would be greater on an order of magnitude.

How much worse is the 4.0's mileage than the (stock) 3.0's? I thought the EPA spec was something like 1-2 MPG at best..

Power output would be about the same for each one. Personally, I say sell your truck and buy a 4.0 ranger and save yourself the headache.

I think the key to a 5.0 swap with acceptable FE is the axle ratio. We had a '96 2WD F150 S/C 5.0L manual w/3.08 axle and ~29" tires. It would get 20+ MPG @ 70 per, better than my 4.0L Ranger ever has. The F150 was no drag racer but it had enough go to leave most traffic behind.

It weighed about the same as my porker Level II. I don't know if it would be a good idea to go all the way to 3.08 but 3.31 should be about right on a Ranger with 31" tires.

What kind of mileage do you see these days Bob? I suppose you should qualify that w/ how you drive it..

I've been baybing it lately (early shifts, no more than 2k except on the Interstate, and never more than 70 MPH). I'm seeing mileage as high as 18-20 MPG. .. Which I find a pleasant surprise..

The best I can do on a highway trip is about 19 MPG at 70 MPH. I don't pay much attention to around town but it is definitely a lot lower than that.

Sounds like we're on the same page.. Driving 'normally' I see 16-17 MPG combined.

i got 21mpg highway with my 4.0 before the programmer...and 22mpg now with the chip. I usually cruise between 70 and 85mph depending on traffic. I think i get good mileage highway cause my gears are 3.55

Compared to mine, you have taller axle gearing, lighter weight, lower 2WD powertrain friction, narrower tires, a programmer and a more fuel economy friendly overdrive ratio (0.75 vs 0.79 on the manual). It all adds up.

Well selling it is out of the question, I love my truck, plus i couldn't get the tremor system with a 4.0. Also a 4.0 would be better bet for me over supercharger, I was just curious of any write ups on the swap, found alot for the ohv engine, and a few for the ohv to sohc but none 3.0 to sohc.

thanks for the tips bob, rwenzing
