2001 3.0L to replace a 96 ranger 3.0L? Will it work?

Hey guys I am planning to swap my 3.0 out of my 96 ranger because the previous owner NEVER changed the oil and just added oil to it so it is a sludge motor beyond anything I've ever seen. I found a 2001 3.0 with only 60K miles for $600 but I need to know if it will work in my 96? I'm assuming it will but I will probably need a 2001 ecu as well. Any thoughts?

Reading about people treating vehicles like that makes me pretty disappointed in humanity. You can fix engines. You can't fix stupid. Good luck with the swap!

More then likely it will, you will need the ecu definitely. Also you will need to have it all programmed together. You can thank the pats system for that. I went through this with my 4.0L sohc swap. ECU, key cylinder & key reader, 2 pats keys. If you can get the steering column then you'll be in luck it'll have all that in it, besides the ecu that is.
