This is an old trick. Changing the resistance of the Air Intake Temperature sensor fools the PCM into thinking the air temp is warmer than it actually is. The PCM responds by leaning the fuel mixture.
I've read posts in the past that some had even submitted the values of resistors (purchased at Radio Shack for under a dollar) to connect in place of the AIT.
