3.0 throttle response

hello you guys,
Im new to driving the BLUE_Oval. Ive always been a V8 chevy man, but recent economic troubles forced me into a 2002 ford ranger 3.0 v6.
I took a trip out of town and while on the freeway, @ 65 mph, i try passing up the slower cars & i didnt get that JOLT i was used to in a V8 when i flored the gas pedal.

is this normal? i do feel some rough idleling...
i hear the engine working, but dont feel the power. is the V6 vulcan that weak?

bravetitan24 02-16-2011 10:34 AM

They don't call it the 3.slow for nothin'!

mlw20lu 02-16-2011 10:41 AM

wat throttle response? lol

Masteratarms93 02-16-2011 10:54 AM

You're missing 2.0 liters, that's your problem.

But anyway I'm sorry to hear you went to a 3.0 V6 for economic reasons. Most 3.0ers here get around 20mpg depending on gearing, tranny, and tire size. Some get 25 on there stock ones highway. If you needed better gas mileage due to money you should have went with an 01+ 2.3L, they push 30 city and have awesome acceleration.

Scuuba_steve 02-16-2011 01:30 PM

not on this one, i get 12-15 mpg.

bravetitan24 02-16-2011 04:43 PM

12-15 mpg? Are you stock? I have a 3.0 with 33s on it and I get around 14-15 in the city.

Like I said, not really the best vehicle to "downgrade" to for economic reasons lol.

STUPIDHEAD11 02-16-2011 09:08 PM

yeah it isnt a v8...but i changed my plugs and wires and dont put cheap gas in it because the cheap gas like "arco" dosnt burn as clean as chevron. it helps a little but yeah you cant be in a hurry lol its only a 3.0

Scuuba_steve 02-17-2011 08:23 AM

yeah its Stock, i replaced the autolite plugs and Duralast wires that were on it , with MOTORCRAFT plugs and wires &figured out the hard way that the firing order that was in the haynes book was not the way mine was set up.

hope i can slim this fat chick into Kim Kardashian ASAP. LOL

04blackedge 02-17-2011 08:32 AM

So your driving a V6 and wondering why it doesn't feel like a V8?

Really?

Scuuba_steve 02-17-2011 09:30 AM

@04blackedge, no i was just making a comparison to why im new to FORD and why the Vulcan is weak.

darangerdanger 02-17-2011 01:12 PM

I'm going out on a limb and saying it's an auto?

Owning both a 5.3 chev and a 3.0.....you can't expect to be thrown in the back of your seat in the ranger lol. Even with a 4.0(not trying to start anything haha)

But all this 3.slow and bad gas mileage claims seem(imo) to be more towards the auto's. I get 20 mpg with my foot in it probably 80% of the time lol. And yes its true to actually pass I have to drop it down a gear but so what?

12-15 is horrible.

before my 5.0L, I was getting 19-21 on 35's with my 3.0 with 4.10 gears

and kim kardashian is still a fat chick lol. its amazing what airbrushing can do

Scuuba_steve 02-17-2011 02:00 PM

@ mlw20lu- Kim is Thick in all the right places man. but she does have her fat days. lol

@darangerdanger- yeah man, i have to disable the O/D to really get on it on the highway. but its all good. im starting to fall inlove with it. These Rangers Actually look good with just some minor mod's.
I have to say, it is a WAY better truck than an S-10.

STUPIDHEAD11 02-17-2011 02:13 PM

^ ummmm duhh? haha but yea, 3.0 aint bad for towing normal stuff, it is not fast or super sick but for a beater you will not find anything better IMO. hey if you "O/D drop" at around 25 itll throw you back in your seat but thats about the only speed range that will do it.

this may seem erroneous but look up the air silencer delete mod. cost nothing and IMO makes a difference with gear dropping and get up. and itll sound kinda kool

Alwaysbroke13 02-20-2011 10:51 PM

Hey man i was wondering the same dam thing. I sold my silverado and switched to a ranger it runs good and looks good but mann that power loss is craziness wtf. Im thinkin maybe its ford. Maybe the s 10 is slow? But if u find some how to give it some balls please contact me

Daily Driver 02-21-2011 02:43 AM

Also check out the "throttle cable mod," another freebie that may help. I get about 20 on the highway driving about 55-65, if it is all highway. But that is a 4x4 auto w/ 4.10's and 30's. Not fantastic, but it keeps working and is paid for. Tows decently too for what it is.

kfc ranger 03-24-2011 11:53 PM

WTF???---LOL. The truck is big - kind of like a kardashian ass--lol and has a 3.0 in it what do you want?
I have had my 2004 for two days, 5 speed by the way, and it is not a screamer, I drive in city trafic both ways 87% of the time never making it to fifth gear.

The real question for the standard trans guys is shift point, rpm, and torque to get the max fuel ecomomy.

my truck seems like it has little torque and likes to "purr between 1500 and 3000 grand.

Question is what is the "performance band" as far as rpm is for this engine

chuck

bdtaylor1979 08-20-2011 09:33 PM

Dang! My truck is a 2000 ext cab 3.0 with auto trans and I get 17 in town and 23-24 highway
