3.0 W/Valve Recession... Question.
 
I am looking into finally fixing my 2004 Ford Ranger Tremor with the 3.0.

I have heard that it is best to get heads from a newer 3.0... Something after '06.

Everything I'm finding online claims it will fit my truck... but how do I know for sure? Once I tear everything down, I will have a very limited amount of time to do the rebuild... Since it is still my every day driver.

Scrolling through this link on eBay, it says "Fitment Type" and says "RANGER 00-08 6-183 (3.0L)" I'm not sure what the "6-183" is, and I'm unsure about the difference with a Flex-Fuel Vs. Non-Flex.

How can I be certain this cyl. head will fit my 2004? Since this post is for an '05 Taurus?

3.0l Vulcan engine was first made in 1986, there were very few changes over the years, last model year for the 3.0l Vulcan was 2008
In 1999 Ford changed the valve stem size to 7MM, which didn't really effect much.
So you could literally use any head from 1986 to 2008 3.0l Vulcan
I would avoid used heads from 2004 to 2006 for the obvious reason of exhaust valve recession issue.
And to stay with same valve stem size you should use 2000-2008 head fitment, you don't have to but for future parts ordering I would stay in that window.
1986 to 1998 would be the other window, 8MM valve stems

The Flex Fuel heads had smaller domes, 47cc compared to 49cc if memory serves, but in practical use you can use either, as long as BOTH heads are the same dome size

Taurus and Sable both used the 3.0l Vulcan engine, and same heads for the model year, they also used 3.0l Duratec which is NOT the same as Vulcan engine
Car 3.0l Vulcan used a different cam and head gasket, so heads themselves would be fine on a Ranger using Ranger head gaskets
Not sure 2005 head would be a good bet, even from a car, it falls in the 2004-2006 TSB even though it isn't a ranger I wouldn't roll the dice myself

Have you called local machine shops?
Valve jobs can be less expensive than used head, shipping heads adds to the cost, so included that in used head pricing
Call a few places as valve job prices vary
And ask about exchanges, some shops have rebuilt heads ready to go and just charge for the work done with your heads in exchange, as long as they are not cracked, then they rebuild those and sell them to the next guy
So drop and go

Only reason Fords TSB said to put on new heads is because they don't/can't use a machine shop to do warranty work, a valve job, because then they would have to warranty machine shop work, which they wouldn't

For 2000-2008 engines, i.e. 7MM valve stems

6 is probably for V6 engine, 6 cylinder engine
183 is the displacement, 182.2 cu in = 3 liters

Ford Ranger II 3.0 liter Engines

Heads are the same, but click on the link for the differences.
The link from eBay is for regular fuel and has the 7mm valve stem with conical spring.

Make sure and use the correct Ranger head gaskets for a rear wheel drive truck.
Don't use the Taurus gaskets, they are meant for the engine to be mounted side ways.

Can't answer when Ford had the problems with the sunken valve seats.

I am going to go to some junk yards tomorrow to see what I can find... I am trying to take the cheapest route. I am likely going to be selling it in February. So I just want it to hold me over until then, and have the misfire fixed.

Everything I've found online relating to a valve job shows to be more expensive than jut swapping the head/heads.

It's always worth checking a local shop for that pricing (as Ron pointed out) it's really quite the different affair Vs seeing stuff on line.
