I read that it is on my passenger side valve cover but I still can't seem to find it for some reason. Is it hidden somewhere where it would be hard to see or should it be jumping out at me? Does anyone happen to have any diagrams or pictures or a ranger engine so I have an idea where it might be? I'd like to at least check it since it's been a while since it was replaced. Thanks.

 

I always thought it was on the driver side valve cover toward the transmission.

 

After I posted this, I called a ford dealer to ask him if they had any PCV valves. Then, I had him bring up a diagram of my engine and he said it showed passenger side valve cover. The thing is, I thought it looked like it was on the back of the valve cover on the driver's side? I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to get the PCV valve. I'll have one of them come out with me to take a look.

i'm assuming based on your description of your truck in your signature its on the driver's side valve cover. 2001 and earlier with a 3.0 or 4.0 v6 have it on the driver's side, four bangers are on the passenger.

 

if by the right side you mean passenger side, none of the 3.0s were ever on the passenger side, the oil fill cap is on that side

I just looked under there again and I think I spotted it.....unfortunately. lol They sure like to put the simplest things to change in very tough and tight spots! So, do I basically just twist the hose off and then turn the valve to take it out? Thanks for your help guys.

Actually, I just went out and reached back there and the valve pops straight up without any resistance at all. Is it supposed to come out that easy? It's almost like it's just sitting in there. There's a big rubber round piece that the valve fits in the middle of. Does that come off too or do I leave that alone? It looks like the toughest part of this is going to be the location! I can't even see the hose back there where it connects to the valve!

 

I thought it seemed kind of odd when the guy from the dealership told me passenger side when he was looking at a diagram. I guess he either had the wrong engine up or was looking at it backwards somehow! Anyway, I'll see if I can somehow reach under there to get it out and see if I get a rattle. Thanks.

 

The "black piece" it sits in is just a rubber grommet. Leave that alone. The PCV valve on all engines i've worked on just pull up without a hassle. When I replaced mine I pulled the hose running to it off at the plastic "L" connector that's attached to the PCV itself. The plastic piece is a ***** to get off and evn more of a ***** to put back on. I had to lay on top of the engine rather than going from the fender because of how the intake is setup and the PCV being under it. Hope that helps. If you have any questions just ask.

 

Thanks for your help. Yeah, I think I'm going to have to do the same thing to be able to do this myself. I hope the one I'm getting from the dealer comes with that plastic "L" connector? That would make it a little easier anyway. Maybe when I go to the dealership to get the new valve I'll pretend that I still don't know where it's at and still have someone come out and show me. Maybe I can talk him into helping me put it on while he's at it! lol Worth a shot anyway.

 

It's REALLY easy to change! I can take pictures tomorrow if you would like. I purchased mine from AZ and it came with the plastic L connector in the box. The problem I had was getting the connector back on the valve itself. It was a tight fit.

 

Yeah, if you wouldn't mind taking a couple of pictures I'd appreciate it! It does look like the job itself is very easy. It's trying to squeeze my hands back there to reach it and trying to find the hose that connects to it may be the hard parts of this. I'll probably have to lay on top of the engine myself like you said you had to do. Thanks again.

 

For some reason my sister decided she needed to take the camera shopping with her. When she gets back i'll take some pictures for you. If you're right handed i'm sure it would be easier for you. I'm a lefty and I hate having to get at stuff with my right hand that's why I had to lay on the engine and had a hard time.

I wasn't able to get any pictures because they didn't get back until sundown. I will definately hide the camera and take some tomorrow! Sorry for the holdup!

 

Thanks, I appreciate it. If it ends up being a big hassle don't worry about it! I bought the valve today and it came with two connectors. One connector for one hose and the other for two hoses. Which does my particular ranger have? Just would like to know so when I'm feeling around in there I know how many hoses are hooked up to it in case I have to kind of do this blindly. Thanks.

OK, I got the valve off and it's disconnected from the hose. A lot of gunk in the old one but it still rattles. I still want to replace it since it's overdue. Anything I should do besides just popping the new one in? Anything I should clean off or check? Thanks.

 

LOL. At 2:30 in the morning? Talk about dedication! I wouldn't clean anything off now that the hole is exposed. Nothing really to check. Just reconnect the hose to the connector and put the PCV back where it belongs and you're good to go!

 

LoL, yeah, I have to admit that I've built up an obsession with my truck lately. It's old and I want to keep it running as long as possible. Plus, I'm going on a long trip in a week and a half so I'm taking care of everything I can think of before the trip. Living in an apartment complex that doesn't allow vehicle maintainance kind of forces me to do these things late at night also! Anyway, I took care of it and the new one is on. Sounds good. How much of a pain was yours?

 

It wasn't too much of a pain getting it off but it was a real pain putting the new one on! Putting the connector on the valve itself was a tight fit too. Had to be careful not to break it. Then, I basically did what you did! lol I climbed onto the engine so I could reconnect the hose. Reaching everything from the fender wasn't much of a problem but everything is to tight and I just couldn't see the hose at all from that spot. Doing it at 2:30AM in a parking lot didn't make it any easier either! But, it's done at least. Now I have to try and figure out the knocking issue that I mentioned in my other thread. Thanks.
