When to replace the cam chain.

Like the title says. I cant find a definitive answer on whether this needs to be changed or not, My rigs got 140,000 on it ( this was/ is my first vehicle, so a few of those were hard miles...) but make no noises or anything like that. Theres a little slack in the chain itself, but since theres no tensioner, there has to be a little play, right? If it does have to be done, ill do the gear to. Is the crank gear removeable, it looks like a real PITA to get off, so it may stay on just cause. Any ideas?

My front covers already off, I just need to know if the chain and gear should be changed as PM, or if its overkill and not necessary.

To answer my own question ten years or 139,439 miles is when the gears and chain should be replaced. I will say I thought this was going to be a lot more difficult than it was. I made sure i had the new parts in hand ($65 at carquest for two new gears and a chain) then removed them. That crank gear i was so sure needed a two jaw puller to remove, came off in my hand. Had these swapped out in about ten minutes. Did I really need it? Im still not sure, A dial indicator would probably have less play in it now, but I didnt do any before and afters, so ill never know, The rest of the truck will get put back together over the weekend and hopefully ill never have to go this far into it again.
