I have an 02 3.0 liter xlt, 2wd I'm getting around 15 miles to a gallon! That just don't seem right, any suggestions?

Yeah i get anywhere from 14-18 depending on how i drive.

 

Having the same exact truck, when it as stock I averaged around 19 mpg mixed. Since lifting 5.5" and new 33" tires I changed my driving habits and was still able to average 19 mpg. Now that Im regeared to 4.56 I get 18 mixed.

Easy on the throttle, keep the rpms around 2500 as much as possible. Your truck might need a tuneup, clean IAC/MAF new plugs/wires/coilpack etc and that may help. 15mpg is VERY low, dont let anyone convince you otherwise. Its all about how you drive

Depends how much city/highway/sitting idling you do that could be good, or it could be bad.

If your all city with lots of red light idling, 15 is probably close to what I'd expect. If you average 50/50 city highway that seems a tad low.

 

With my 2007 3.0, I was getting around 19-20 MPG this summer. I'd do look at the standard stuff. Air filter, plugs, oil change, maybe a little SeaFoam.

I will say that during the winter months it may have been closer to 16 since I parked outside. That thing just drank gasoline like nothing during those cold winter days.

15 mpg is low

 

My 17 year old son is getting about 12 mpg. I remember highway driving of about 21 and 17 combined. We just cleaned the MAF and throttle body. This did not seem to help much.

 

To the OP, is it auto or 5spd?

I rarely get below 20mpg in my 5spd ex-cab 4x4. Strictly highway driving yields 21-23mpg. Personal best is 23.4. If you have a 5spd, don't lug it, it will get worse mileage. These engine don't make power down low, go easy on the throttle and let it rev to 3-4k depending on conditions. My truck sees close to 4k rpm daily, uses 1/2qt oil every 5k miles and has over 198k miles on it.

 

Our 2002 Ranger is a 3.0, Automatic transmission, 3.73 rear gear, LT 235/75/15 mud tires. We recently cleaned the MAF and the throttle body, and reset the PCM by disconnecting the battery and jumping the hot to ground cables. Not sure the PCM will change anything but another forum mentiond doing this. The truck has about 150K miles.

 

20 mpg average, 1993 XLT long-bed with camper shell, automatic
transmission. Maybe 25% city driving, 75% highway.

 

I used to get 14-15 mpg when I lived in the city and rarely got on the highway. Stock '04 edge 2wd.

Now that I live outside the city and commute on the highway a lot, I get around 18-19.

 

99 with auto, 4x4, and I get 18-19 around town, 19-22 highway depending on the load, the terrain and how far I've got my foot into it. 194K+ miles.
