98 3.0 MPG Log (shows how mods affected MPG)

I've been recording MPG for a few months now to see how recent modifications affected gas mileage. With all of the threads started about how to improve gas mileage I thought this might be of some interest.

Also, I will keep updating this after the roller rockers are installed if anyone is interested.

Redneckstone 05-09-2007 10:05 AM

you run 102 octane gas why....

KARPE 05-09-2007 10:12 AM

the gasoline confuses me, is e10 ethanol? if not why did you not stick with the same octane gas until the new tuned setting? orrrr am I just reading it wrong ( the climb from 89-102 octane confuses me)

102 octane gas wouldn't be any more useful in our trucks than 89 if the truck wasn't tuned for it. you would just be wasting money at the pump.

Also what's the reasoning behind odometer and actual miles being roughly 30miles off?

and why on an 87 mileage setting?

My apologies. I used the double click feature to create those cells and it incremented the numbers instead of copying them. The spreadsheet is now correct.

Yes, 89 E10 is 89 Octane with 10% Ethanol. Ignore the climb from 89 to 102 Octane it should have all been 89 E10.

The Odometer and Actual miles are a ratio of 1:1.113 to correct for my larger tires.

Marcaronio 05-09-2007 10:36 AM

Also, I should note that I used 89 E10 gasoline with the 87 mileage tune as Fred informed me that the 87 mileage tune would work with either 87 Octane or 89 E10 fuel.

Yeesh, I only run 87 octane on my 3.0 and I average at least 18-19 City/Highway combined. A reason why I don't lift my truck and run 30" tires.

Some of my best highway MPG ever was around 26 MPG. I have underdrive pulleys to be delivered tomorrow and just installed new spark plugs, wires, and the demon coil pack. I'll be tempted to see what that does for my fuel economy. Granted, I think one of both of my O2 sensors are dying, so I haven't been able to obtain solid data henceforth.

vindex1963 05-09-2007 01:05 PM

Interesting your MPG dropped after the pulleys. I would think that the opposite would happen and a +2mpg change with the efan.
I have gotten a worst of 21 and a best of 25mpg. I see a few around that get that. Guess I'm lucky.
I just looked again...you have a 4X4 or a $X$.

You also have an OHC not an OHV and therefore is not comparable.

I think I got on it a bit more after the pulleys to see if I could tell a difference in power. Again, you have a OHC not an OHV so the numbers are different.

vindex1963 05-09-2007 03:25 PM

I think mine is a OHV. I thought all 3.0L are.

RentonRanger 05-09-2007 10:40 PM

I'm interested to see if my mileage goes up with the 92 Performance tune. Didn't really notice a difference with the 87 Perf tune. Might make it more worthwhile to keep using 92 if the mileage increases like yours did.

He has a OHV just like I do. They never put a 3.0 OHC in the ranger/b series. The only OHC that went into the ranger is the 4.0 SOHC.

2003stealthedge 05-09-2007 11:11 PM

so if got a tuner and had stock tires would my mpg increase at all?

iwantaranger 05-09-2007 11:11 PM

u will get better gas milage in the summer cuz in the winter they change there gas to soemthing other **** and it runs like **** this is in new england

I run the 93tq tune and get 18.8city and around 25hwy where as with stock 87 I got 15 and 19.

greygooseranger 05-10-2007 01:56 PM

^^^^ Thats pretty good... 25 hwy, finally someone getting mileage like me...lol. (with a 6 cyl)

gatorblue92 05-10-2007 02:09 PM

hmmm interesting

RentonRanger 05-10-2007 09:47 PM

Running the 92 tune all the time won't hurt anything, will it? Just wondering since our trucks were designed to run on 87.

OTRtech 05-11-2007 04:40 AM

Would it be possible to include the average daily temperature on the spreadsheet ? I have a feeling the air temp has more of an effect on mileage than we may realize.

As long as you have the 92 tune on your truck it will be fine. It's designed to use 92 all the time as long as thats the tune your using.
