Okay well Justin invited me and dave to go to byron dragstrip with him and his buddies and when we got there we decided to see what a 3.0L with the wipple compared to my truck a 4.0L.

First Justin has extended cab 2wd 3.0L 3.73 gear. And for me I have a extended cab 4x4 4.0L 4.10 gear for my truck all I have done is put a rear locker and done the MAF mod and removed the air silencer.

3.0L is #708 and 4.0L is #705
And the results are......

My truck is quite a bit heavier than Doug's truck because of being an extended cab Edge, and also I quite often have a traction problem at the dragstrip. My tires are probably a bit taller too, as well as the computer tuning isn't as aggressive. Doug has a full race program on his.

I'm still learning how to launch this thing with so much more torque than stock. On that run, I had a pretty good launch, did my best not to break loose into second gear like I've done so many times before, and then slammed third and fourth as hard as I could.

What size tire were you running? Man I can't believe the Whipple isn't faster than that. I guess if I Whipple my truck I'm going to have to pulley it up some. I'd have to be at least in the 15s to be satisfied (of course I'd never race with my big heavy 32" tires, I'd get some 16" mustang wheels and mount some low profile tires on there.. and of course chip off the speed limiter.)

I have 255/70/15 tires on my truck, they're about .1 inch taller than stock, but quite a bit wider.

I run the same size tire on the rear as you but the stock size up front. They hook better than the stockers, thats for sure. You'll get better Justin, just gotta find that hook.

I've actually been in Doug's truck, and it flies. Of course, his truck is a regular cab, with 4.10 gears, exhaust, H.O. tune on the computer, Drag Radials, etc......

His last official 1/4 time was 14.2, and that was while he was riding the rev limiter the last 500 feet...

I'd say a regular cab would see better times than that, traction allowing.

I'm really kind of puzzled that the times aren't better than that. You gained 80 RWHP, and only lost a second or so off your 1/4 mile time. :?

Stock, my truck ran mid 17's....now, it's high 16's ( 16.8+ )

I should hope that I would AT LEAST run a flat 15, hopefully lower, with the Whipple....maybe I'm crazy.

Yeah, if I whippled my truck and didn't run at least in the 15s (*with smaller tires) I would be SORELY disappointed. Reg. Cab 5speed w/ 4.10s.

My truck usually ran low to mid 18's stock, so the Whipple made a pretty nice difference. There were 2 runs when I managed 17.8's, never did duplicate them until putting on the headers. After that, I was in the mid-17's. If the headers had fit better on my truck, I would still have them.

My new reg.cab sub box

You must also remember that Dougs Whipple is a High Output model, the one for the public does not put out as much power.

The charger unit itself is identical; the ONLY difference between his and an off-the-shelf one is a smaller pulley, and a computer reflash to allow the smaller pulley to be used without horrible detonation. He is, however, using 104 octane.

A lifted school bus and more...

The 24 psi written on the timeslip was the tire pressure Eric was using in his rear tires. I was running mine at 22 psi.

hi

Damn. Yall needs to come down here and race. I run 16.7s with a stock 3.0 and tires, of course mines a reg. cab. I think you should be seeing better times than that.

If I put 4.10's in, I could probably hit the 15 second range without too much trouble. I enjoy the fuel economy of the 3.73's though.

The 4.10s KILL your top end. About half way through third you feel it drag to the line.

Do you go 120mph with the stock driveshaft? If you do, you are a very brave man.

Dave:

I've heard a lot about the resonating driveshaft and the *possibility* of self-grenading under high-speed loads.

Is this with the aluminum driveshaft or the steel one? Both?

What company makes a good driveshaft? I know of a carbon one, but it's $800.

Depends on what you have already. I know there were some "fixes" that required aluminum driveshafts to be fitted to Rangers. If you still have a steel driveshaft turning 4.10 gears you are asking for trouble I think. If the front end fails and drops at 120mph you are going for quite a ride.

The trouble stems from the length of the shaft, the material used to make it and the 4.10 gears. That results in a heavy fast spinning shaft which is the opposite of what you want. If you can't change the gears, get a lighter shaft.

This is true in Mustangs as well. With the factory 3.27 gear you're fine with the stock steel shaft. When you put 4.10 gears in you increase the speed of the drive shaft by 25% at every road speed. You'll get major driveline vibe at 160mph in a Cobra like that. Switch to aluminim and things get a lot smoother. Even my '89 Mustang was bad going from 3.08 to 3.27 with the steel shaft, I switched to aluminum and it was like a new car.
