Dont Know Where to Begin..?
hey guys.
well today my truck jus came out of my schools shop for gettin rear brakes done, thats problem number 1. well anyways i get it back today, and im drivin home from school(i go to a tech school, and im in auto shop) so im comin home i pull up to my drive way and get ready to put it in reverse to back down the driveway. as i go to put it in reverse it acts real weird and got real sloppy all of a sudden, and i finally got it in reverse and backed down my driveway into the 2 car garage, where i left it half way in and the front end hanging out,(because i was gonna be heading back out in 5 mins) and so i as i going to put it into park something seemed like it snapped and now its stuck it park, but the lever is floppy and hangs down in the drive posisition while the tranny is locked in park. this is where my moms bmw goes and keep in mind its under 0 degrees here and so now the truck probably has to get towed, and get work done to it..... again.
i took apart all the plastic under the steering wheel to get a look at all the linkage and what not, and everything seems to be in place, but i think its somewhere up in the steering, somewhere that isnt visible for me to see. so i dont wanna go taking that stuff apart and accidentaly screw anything more up.
my question is, what do you think happend? and do you think it will be expensive. this truck has needed so much, alternator, rear brakes 2 times within a year, (all of including wheel cylinders, shoes, and hardware) and so that wasnt to cheap, also front brakes, all the maintenence stuff, and now this.. boy oh boy. by the way its a 99 3.0 off road, with a 118k.
thanks
mike

You can put the unit in any gear you want from underneath. You'll see where the linkage comes in on the drivers side of the tranny.
BUT BEWARE: if you take it out of park while laying under there and it's on a slope it's going to roll. Be VERY, VERY careful if you have to shift the tranny from under the truck.

anyone have any ideas of wut it possibly could be?
thanks for the quick responses.

My father in law's Crown Vic did that.
First, a bolt fell out from under the dash. It was to the steering column clamp that holds the shifter lever mechanism in place. You should still be able to get into D with it flopping, it's that "pull toward you" detent that you are not overcoming first.
You know, how you have to pull the shift handle toward you to get it out of Park. And don't forget the brake pedal interlock. That's why you are busting your knuckles, I'm afraid.

and by the way earl, a while back my shifter had some sloppiness in it(not near as much now)but ya i went under the dash and there is like a clamp thing held on my 2 bolts, and i tightened those up, and it took care of it, but now something is real broken. lol
hopefully ill get it back tomorrow, and on the road again.
