Hi everyone i just got to use my brothers code scanner and got these codes
P0401-EGR Flow insuf.
P0171-System too lean(bank1)
P0174-System too lean(bank2)
These codes have been on since i bought the 99 Ranger awhile ago they seem to reset when the batterys off and stay off for a good time then return. I can hear slight ticking sounds coming from engine when hitting gas might be slight leak somewhere. It seems to always idle around 950-1100 is this higher then normal? maybe because of these codes high? If anyone knows about these codes and how to fix them please give any advice you can about it.

update: changed the DPFE SENSOR , seemed to run alot better idle wise, but after letting it sit i started it cold to move and while sitting in reverse it drops rpms too around 500-700 and gets rough idle a tad then the Cel came back on.. it only seems todo this low rpm thing when cold. It has 183k atm i bought it at 170k could it need timing adjusted? Also when i got inspected needed a new egr valve so i doubt thats the problem.

edit 3/31 - another update after reseting the Cel again and letting it relearn idle and stuff a good long time seemed to be running very well again untill i went onto the highway and got up too about 70 then Cel back again .. man what an annoying issue i just want that stupid light off.... i might try and return the sensor for a new egr but i dont see how one that new would be bad.. so now what could it be .. EGR.. clogged intake.. timing.. seafoam idea is kinda scary sounding... has anyone had this same issue would love to hear advice.

Well here i am back once more i installed new egr otherday and did alot of test driving with it this afternoon and yet again the Cel is back on......so its not DPFE SENSOR or the EGR valve. Please if anyone has ideas let me know thanks.

I was thinking that also Rangerstepside, but heres current update since my last post my ranger stalled about 2 times infront of my house<lucky> and would just start back up normally. Then a few days later i came out to start it and had a dead battery and again this sunday after leaving work.. got a jump drove home then after cleaning terminals very well it started without jump this time then was dead after shutting off. Checked batt water levels and stuff all seemed good is from 07 tho, tried with a newer taurus battery and worked perfect both having same volts. Had tested at advanced auto volts good but had a irregular crank amps .. anyways replaced it with a nice one and now feels much more responsive also after heavyfooting it around some the Cel has not come on yet<fingers crossed>. So possible cause for Cel bad batt? weird.. Anyways im heading to OBX NC on thursday not taking the ranger tho :'( gotta drive the folks in the explorer.. If the light comes back before i leave will let you know but for now anyone with this issue best advice i can give is CHECK YOUR BATTERY.

I can't see a battery itself causing the issue. It's job when the engine is running is offloaded to the alternator. It's possible that your alternator is on it's way out. One diode could be gone, enough that it barely charges the battery when the engine is running, but drains it whenever the truck is shut off. It's also possible the weak old battery got below the voltage required for certain sensors causing the ECM to think they had failed, and now that a new, strong battery is in, it can maintain the voltage without the alternator's help. But it won't last long if that's the case. I could be wrong; my understanding isn't too great, but hey, there is still the off chance I'm right.

I'd get it checked if I were you. All you need is a graphing multimeter to do it.

Manifold vacuum leak - hoses, gaskets
Unmetered air leak anywhere between the MAF sensor and the throttle body

Yep lights back on, going to NC Thursday so will work more on it when back still feels alot better with newer batt. Ya larryr thought it might be alternator also but seems to charge well.. my sub capacitor reads 14+ when running and 12.5 when off, with the old batt it would slowly fall to around 11.5 when off. Yes very good advice rwenzing most vacuum tube's seem to be original and could be causing some leaks and the manifold gasket and cleaning the throttle body is my next attempt maybe and if all else fails o2 sensor could be it too.

I'd look at that notorious pcv tube elbow that goes bad on these engines.

I'll search around for the thread that has a photo for you.

If you get bored at the beach, I'm turning wrenches every evening all week an hour up the road. Swapping 2.9s. I got ambitious.

Wave as you go by (you're probably running 13 to 64 to 168 instead of 17S tho'). Was over 80 degrees again today here, rain tonight. Enjoy!

This is a very old post on a problem i finally found the solution a few months ago. After i first replaced the DPFE the issue seemed to come back so i returned it and bought a new egr to replace my rusty looking one. This also had no effect since the Cel came back, so i left the new egr on did a seafoam still on. A few months later my bros 99 taurus 3.0 was having the same Cel #s, we picked up a new DPFE knowing to try that first but we decided to test it on my ranger. The Cel was gone "JOY" so the issue seemed to be caused by both a bad EGR + DPFE. if anyone is having this code try both 1st to solve. We picked up one more DPFE for the taurus also fixed its Cel.
