Less throttle. Lighter foot. Don't let bigger girls ride with you. 2 hot skinny girls is ok.

From my experience accelerating slowly and keeping the RPM's low yields lower fuel economy. Driving more aggressively (within reason) and keeping rpm's up yielded over 1mpg better than shifting at 2500 rpm and barely touching the gas.

Heres a question, From what you all have seen (I have not done this yet) do you get better mpg with tailgate down or up?

They've proven that it does not matter either way. I used to keep mine down all the time. (Mainly because my tailgate was bashed in). Up or down I never noticed a difference.

no tailgate in city --> weight is key

tailgate on highway --> aerdynamics

civic in city 28mpg
grayhound bus in city 10mpg

civic highway 35 mpg
grayhound highway 30 mpg

@OP - less revs, dont drive if you can avoid it, skinnier tires if at all possible, reduce weight (remove jump seats, tailgate etc), cruise windows down A/C gobbles gas. run lighter oil and keep on top of maintenance, increase effeciency of combustion so less fuel needs to be burned ((sparks, wires, injectors, seafoam etc))).

I avg. 19 with my 02 edge 4x4 3.0 5spd reg cab (4.10s in the front and rear ftw). Just done all routine maintence and it helped out alot. Plugs and wires, new coil, fuel filter, air filter, and all fluids changed, I'm probably forgetting something.

Thats with 15in steel wheels and 31x10.50 at tires and 95% highway miles, shifting around 2500rpm.

when i got my tonneau i noticed an improvement in my highway MPGs. it makes cruisin around 70-75 noticably easier, but thats in comparison to the raised canopy i had on before. compared to no bed accessory it is really only a minor improvement.

I hate the tailgate up or down discussion, and if anyone is using Mythbusters as a reference is ignorant.

Car companies used advanced modeling software to create the beds of their trucks, length, depth, etc. My dynamics professor worked for GM running that software. The key thing to remember is the bed is created a low pressure zone in the bed so when the high pressure winds come over the truck at highway speed it cannot dive into the bed and make the truck heavier

There is much more to the discussion than that, but I don't time right now to get into it all.

Get a scangauge / ultra gauge to get a good view on what driving technique actually works for mpg. Then have a look at the hypermiling forums for some great tips on driving and vehicle mods that actually work.

Actually Mythbusters "determined" that better mpgs were had with the tailgate up.

tonneau cover, reduce intake restriction, reduce exhaust restriction, E-fan, tires at proper PSI, thinner motor oil, ac off.

those are the big ones, besides your driving habit. habit alone, i can get 16mpg city or 21.
