caming my 3.0

A man by the name of Tom Morana makes a few different cams for the 3.0 engine. i am buying one in about a month. just wanted to know if anyone had an idea of which would be better. I am also thinking about putting aftermarket springs, and maybe a set of rocker rollers. but i am for sure putting springs and a cam. just wanna know which cam i should buy.

Holy cow! The springs are more than the cam lol. Which one will you get? Id get the bigger one just cuz a lopping engine sounds sa-weet!

Look at what you intend to do with the truck ?
Is it 2 or 4 WD ?
Get the working RPM Range for each cam and apply that to what you will use the truck for and how you will be working the engine.
What gears will you be running vs tire size.
If you buy a cam that works in the higher rpms range and are running 3.00 gears then the engine will not get to use the full potential of the cam.

Me, I would get something that would add some lower end to the 3.0 where it lacks it.
Increasing the low end will get you more seat of the pant feeling when you take off and attempting to pass.

In a Camshaft… more lift and shorter duration creates more low end torque or “Power” per say.
Look at the rpm range of the cams and if it starts making power at a lower rpm then that MIGHT be the cam you want; better street-ability and off road power in the lower rpm ranges.

1.7 rockers could give you some more power off a stock cam but if you are buying a new cam then consider talking to CompCams, ask for a specific spec, i,e, short duration, high lift.
Watch the lift doesn’t go too high for stock pistons… ask a Tech about it.

good advice....when you say a tech, you mean like a dyno shop or a place that specializes in selling engine parts. i seen cams for my engine at 1.8 being sold by tom morana, or something like that, but no 1.7's to be seen. ill see if i can find a good shop to talk to.

PS sorry im a newb as youve noticed

Good advice… who knows for sure but the 1.7 is the ratio of the Rocker Arms not the cam… just to be clear and it is a common upgrade to change the Rocker Arms before changing the cam in an engine just to get a little more power, that is if you don’t want to take the engine apart to install a new cam.
The Tech, well it could be at a store or from CompCams… me, I would talk to CompCams Tech Line first, get your ideas together, then talk to a store tech and see what they offer. Be careful, some stores, on-line or not, sell what they have not what is best for you, the CompCam Tech Line will offer you the RIGHT Cam then it is up to you to find it.

Don’t rush into a cam change, it is a great idea to get more power BUT if you decide on the wrong cam for what you want to do, the after effects can be a nightmare.

Take your time and do it right the first time.

oh right...typo on my part...and to be clear haha rocker arms and rocker rollers are the same thing? yes?

thank you i think if im gunna do anything it would be the rocker arms first. gunna look it up tonight, do some more research and how to's to see how hard it is to do.

Just me, if I built an engine for the wrong application it would not be a pleasure to drive.
Setting up the engine for what you want to do is the best all around method and ends up with a great experience in driving.

Again, just me but if you buy a Cam that is used for Racing and then decide to use it for a DD you will burn extra gas for another thing to think about.

gotta go !

First IMHO I do not like any of the Cams on the Link… but if you know someone that has one and maybe have driven one then go for it !

Contact CompCams or another Cam Manufacturer and see what they say.
Look for a short duration, like around 250-260 and a lift around 480- 500, allowing for OEM Pistons and what RPM does the torque comes in and when does the RPMs end.

It is hard to make a suggestion, what I think is one thing what you thing is your thing, so think about what you want to do with the truck once done.
Make a list of what you have, tire size, gear ratio, lift, weight and use; read it and read it to make sure you know what you want.
Now contact a Cam Tech and talk to them and then you can make a good edg-a-ma-cated guess.

Also, you mentioned 33 or 35” tires and 4.10 gearing, you need to raise the ratio to 4.56s; this alone will give you a seat of the pants increase in power.

Good Luck,

If ur gonna put a new cam in then I wold wait till u had the money to buy the rockers. This way ur not taking the engine apart twice an setting ur valves twice also! Just my 2 cents!!

Hey alexg0097,

How’s this going ?

Sorry there were no answers for these question:
Roller Rocker Arms do the same thing as a std Rocker Arm but with less friction, then there is the roller lifters, which are not Rocker Arms but are part of most engines now-a-days.

OTE=Kris03;1873397]thank you i think if im gunna do anything it would be the rocker arms first. gunna look it up tonight, do some more research and how to's to see how hard it is to do.[/QUOTE]

If you have limited funding and want to do the 1.7 Roller Rockers first, keep in mind that when you buy a Cam to compensate for the higher lifter rockers.
You should get a little power

By “After Effects” I meant putting in a Cam for high RPM use and finding out it doesn’t work for Trail rides, no low end torque.
Just look at what you want to do with the truck and contact the Cam Manufacturer’s Tech Line.

This is good advise, in fact, if possible, get a Cam Kit with all the stuff that works together.
Also as stated above what the rocker ratio vs the cam lift… too much and things start to bind up, like valve springs and rocker arms.

Let us know where you are and where you are thinking of going now.
