borla or flomaster????
#26
I just put a "slowmaster" 10 series on my 4.0 and I have a noticeable gain, but then again I went to 2.5"pipe after the cats. Now my roomate put a flow 40 on his '03 f-150 with the 5.4., other than the muffler everything is stock and his truck had some gains, however small the gain was there.
The difference is design.
This is what the inside of a Flowmaster looks like.
Its like the exhaust is running an obstacle course. It goes in the muffler, hits a baffle, slows down, turns, hits another baffle, slows down turns. The design isn't good for flow. But at the same time, its what give Flowmaster its distinct sound.
Borla on the other hand you can see through.
Explain to me how a Flowmaster is better than Borla for performance.
As I said earlier, if you just want sound, get a Flowmaster. If you want performance go Borla.

Where in GA are you?
When I had a Flow 40 on my truck, I gained nothing but sound over stock. I couldn't tell that I lost power, but I certainly gained none.

Gibson is better than Flowmaster as well IMO.
Almost a straight flow design, the exhaust only has to turn once.

I agree with ya Griggs.
It's freakin' exhaust...we've got 4 effin cats...how much improvement do we really expect on a Ranger?? Bump the pipe size up a little, USE A TAILPIPE and the results are just like stock and probably better. Dumped you'll lose low-end. I put tailpipes back on the truck a few weeks back and noticed a definate increase in low-end WITH A 'slowmaster'.
Gains are so minimal on these trucks in regards to exhaust work, that I much rather take a slight hp hit for it to actually sound good, and not like garbage(like a gibson).

My dumping views are strictly based on ACTUAL RESULTS on MY TRUCK.
My Gibson views are based on ACTUALLY HEARING IT ON A 4.0L SOHC RANGER AND COMPARING IT TO MINE WITH A SUPER 40. Plus....is a friggin' opinion.
And again, I'm still believing that sound > performance on a Ranger, because no matter what you do, performance differences are very minimal. I'd rather get the same hp and actually sound good, than to get 1hp more and sound like ***.

I did mine for MPG. I've gained around 1mpg average after doing exhaust and the air box mod. Since the exhaust has paid for itself.
And did you dyno your truck with and without a dump?
