Cats

my truck has 130,000 miles on it, and i want to remove the cats, i havent looked, but where are the o2 sensors and if they are cut out, with they need to be replaced, is it just a quick cut and reweld or not worth it?

Why do you want to?

whippersnapper02 05-13-2009 04:02 PM

You will lose power by taking them off but its your truck.

lifted_Mazda01 05-13-2009 05:39 PM

lose power? i thought they are restrictive,

whippersnapper02 05-13-2009 05:41 PM

Well you will loose low to mid range power. You need some restriction to promote exhaust scavenging. You can't just run a 4" pipe engine back. Also they aren't as restrictive as they used to be.

stock muffler? what about hollowing it out

korey89 05-13-2009 05:45 PM

I don't think I'd want to hear what a 3.0 sounds like with no cats lol

whippersnapper02 05-13-2009 05:45 PM

That will just give you sound. Is that what you are looking for?

lifted_Mazda01 05-13-2009 05:50 PM

no i am getting a quiet aftermarket exhaust, i just want a lil umph

whippersnapper02 05-13-2009 05:52 PM

If you gut out the muffler you still have the small piping and restrictive bends of the stock exhaust. A full catback exhaust will give you some extra power don't expect to be able to light the tires up through 3rd gear or something. Its only a 3.0 Also most exhaust shops crush bend their pipes unless you find one that specifically mandrel bends them of you choose to go that route. I personally like something that is already made for the truck.

lifted_Mazda01 05-13-2009 05:54 PM

lol dont try to light my tires up at 185 a piece, but exhaust is in the future, i just heard if the cat is hollowed it give the engine less restriction, which means a little more power

whippersnapper02 05-13-2009 05:56 PM

On something that flows a lot like a race engine but not a truck V6. You can pull them out and tune the computer for it but you still don't get back all the low end power.

lifted_Mazda01 05-13-2009 05:57 PM

i like my low end power, so i will keep it as is

Lifted,
If your truck is a real dog like mine was, I got a big improvement by changing the cat. I also got a Dynomax cat back from Summit for $150 shipped. I hear they may be less now. It fit perfectly and came with everything. I did them both at the same time but figure the cat was the culprit. It breathes really well now. Before I could not get the rpm's up. Now they increase smoothly and easily. I had a few thousand less miles than you. The 01 may run cleaner than a 95 though. You could try one at a time because the catback bolts right in to a stock converter.

Now it runs better than when I got it at 66k.
