Crank position sensor advance?

I just got to thinking about how people advance their timing and get better results with engines that use distributors, such as a B16 V-Tech Honda I worked on; it was sluggish and didn't get up and go, so we advanced the timing and the thing came to life (so much that we actually retarded the timing to bring it down a notch because it's my girlfriends car). I got to thinking about if I could manually advance the timing on my truck, would it be worth it? The crankshaft position sensor on my truck has on slotted hole and the other one isn't. Does anyone know if this would be something to look into?
