clearing a P1443 CEL code

1996 Ford Ranger 3.0

I'm curious if anyone has seen a P1443 CEL code (EVAP system error) clear on it's own once the problem is fixed? Maybe after a few trips, or something in particular, or am I stuck clearing all of the codes out?

I hate having to run through the complete cycle after clearing all of the codes and I can't do smog until the cycle is completed

(I replaced many of the hoses and verified that the purge solenoid is working. If it's not cleared, I'll replace the purge sensor.)

thx

EVAP codes can be a pain

P1443 Evaporative Emission System Control Valve (low/no flow)

This is a "pressure code" not a part code
It could be a part is bad, usually is, but its not a specific code for "control valve"

P1451 Evap Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit
This would be specific to the wiring or the solenoid control valve specifically, a "circuit" code

Yes, you can clear P1443 and it should only come back after startup and computer runs the EVAP system test

P1000 will stay until drive cycles are completed with no problems found

EVAP system puts negative pressure in the gas tank when engine starts, any gas fumes from driving and fuel sloshing around will be sucked into the engine and burned just like fuel from the injectors
There is a pressure sensor in/on the gas tank
Computer watches the pressure sensors as it applies engine vacuum
No or low flow can be vacuum hose to the rear or the charcoal canister, or any of the hose or pressure sensor
Its just not a specific code so can be a pain to get rid of it

Probably 100+ posts on P1443 and several solutions but not the same solution for each

Here is one thread: https://www.ranger-forums.com/sohc-2...3-code-125467/

Google: ford P1443

Thanks RonD!

But will it clear on it's own (after some time?) if the problem is fixed, or do I have to explicitly clear it? (I think if I clear it, I'll have to run the complete drive cycle and I want to avoid that if I can!)

It will self clear but can take up to 10 drive cycles because its an emissions system, so needs several "tests" before it clears on its own
Better to clear it

Drive cycle to get rid of P1000 only takes 45min
EVAP is often the one that takes 2 drive cycles

Clear codes
Gas tank 1/3 to 3/4, not under 1/4 or full, outside temp 40-100degF
Start cold engine and drive at 30-40mph for 15min, engine warmed up
Drive through town or more precisely stop and go above 25mph then stop again, 5 times, 10min

From a stop accelerate to 45mph, repeat 3 times, 10min
Stop and Idle for 3 min
Drive 40mph and accelerate to 65mph, then take foot off the gas pedal and slow to 40mph, repeat 3 times, 5min

You are done, see if P1000 is gone or if any codes have come back

If P1000 is still there then EVAP is most likely the issue, Test Not Complete, have to let vehicle sit for 6-8 hours and repeat drive cycle

And you can try the above drive cycle without clearing P1443 and see if it self clears, but a real long shot
