CPS squeaking???????

My 04 just started squeaking. I thought at first it was the belt but it wasnt. I found out that it is the cps. Only 45000 miles. I took the cap off and poured some oil down the cps. The squeaking stopped. I have heard some bad things about these going bad and causing the oil pump to stop working and kill the engine. Anyone else have this problem? Should I be worried?

Zs02Edge 07-08-2008 06:16 AM

Yeah you should be worried. Get a new one now!

graniteguy 07-08-2008 08:06 AM

You are correct on the oil. If this fails you have no oil pressure.

it's not very expensive compared to getting a new engine. I would replace it now.

Prerunner-Ranger 07-08-2008 04:56 PM

Yeap, replace it.
I'm going on 100k and mine hasn't started squeaking yet but I need to replace it before it does.

Any special tools required? What is the deal with it? What does the squeaking have to do with the gear on the bottom of it. I put a small amount of pressure on the cap of it and It would stop squeaking. At 45,000 miles, shouldnt it be fine. I heard there are just some bushings in the top that need a little more oil. The squeaking was definatly in the top cap area.
I bought the truck as a certified pre-owned. With the premium warrenty(75,000). Do you think they will cover it. Even if it isnt squeaking anymore. I dont want to tell them I took the cap off. What should I do?

Zs02Edge 07-11-2008 04:50 AM

Since you bought it w/ a warranty, I'd take it in ASAP.

You already know it's squeaking so would you rather have it covered under warranty, replace it yourself (parts are less than $100 and you can do it yourself) or have it grenade itself, loose oil pressure and have to replace your engine?

My CPS/CMS have been replaced twice and I have less than 120k on the odo.

Well it isnt squeaking anymore. My question was, if I take it to the dealer, should I tell them I oiled it or just act like it went away after an oil change. Why are these parts so touchey. This pisses me off that they havent adressed this issue and corrected the flaws. I have read that 3.0's going back to the mid 90's have this same problem.

i would play dumb but make sure they fix it... its super easy to do yourself if you do go that route... basically all you do is set the engine to TDC and make sure the new one is aligned the same way as the old one

rybread5520 07-11-2008 12:23 PM

The dealer wants 110 just to look at it. If it needs to be replaced my warrenty will cover it. But if it is fine then the 110 goes out the window. How much is a factory replacement one? If I change it myself, would they be able to tell later if they do any other engine work. I dont want it to void my warrenty by doing the work myself. What about just pulling it and checking the original for wear. Just seems to early for a part like that to go. I am extremely tight on money right now.

The trick is setting it to TDC... I have a hard time even finding the damn thing in my truck lol, isn't it located right by the Trans fluid dip stick?

rybread5520 07-11-2008 07:47 PM

Yeah. It was easy to find when it was squeaking. Just had to figure out what the damn thing was at first.

What cylinder is the #1 if you are facing the engine from the front. And how do you get it to top dead center. By turning the crankshaft with a big socket. Whats the trick?

Supposedly you can get the camshaft tool from autozone, rent it for free.

My truck is doing it to and I have heard that the shaft gets bent to. But I was wondering what part of the shaft gets bent, because i just took it off and looked brand new and the sensor was all muddy inside.

rybread5520 07-12-2008 03:38 PM

Mine hasnt shown anyt sign of squeaking again. If it was bad I would think it would start to squeak again. It seems it just needed to be oiled. Does my theory sound right?

How difficult was it to put it back in and make sure it was lined up
correctly? I want to check mine.
