Emissions test drive cycle

I took my ranger for the emissions test and it failed due to a vapor solenoid or something like that. I replaced the part, the check engine lighr went out, I took it back for a retest and they told me I had to drive the truck for an undetermined number of miles because the codes were locked out. Has anyone heard of this? If so, how far and how lond do I have to drive it before they are able to test it? Thanks, Billy
