Engine codes

Hey there my 88 Bronco II threw a check engine light after driving through the flood on my road - 14, 15 , 18, 41, 42 and 77 . It’s also always thrown the 95 code. Could that be just due to my o2 sensor getting wet ?

You should post the definitions with code number because no one has them memorized, lol, and you should have already looked them up

14 Ignition pickup was erratic - Ignition Systems <<<< Check TFI wiring connector and PCM(computer) connector

15 (O) No Keep Alive Memory power to PCM pin 1 or bad PCM (Memory Test Failure) <<<<< check computer connector, PCM should have 12volts all the time on pin 1, if you unhooked the battery for any reason then ignore this code and clear it

18 (R) Check base timing & advance function - Timing Tests <<<<< check SPOUT connector

41 (R) System lean - Fuel control and (M) System was lean for 15 seconds or more (no HO2S switching) - Fuel control
42 (R) System rich - Fuel control, and (M) System was rich for 15 seconds or more (no HO2S switching) - Fuel control
Hard to say why, or how, a single O2 sensor could set both lean and rich codes, could water have gotten inside the connector where it connects to main wiring harness?
O2 sensor generates its own voltage, and its low, .1v to .9v so under 1 volt, and in the O2 wiring is the 12volt heater wire and its ground wire, so any water in the connector could short to ground 0volts(Lean) or 12volts(rich)

77 System did not receive "goose" test - see TESTS <<<< ignore this, you probably put PCM into test mode and did not do this test, "goose" means to press down gas pedal all the way during the "test" PCM is checking TPS voltages

95 (O) Fuel pump: open, bad ground or always on - Power / Fuel Pump Circuits <<<< do you have the fuel pump "hot wired", this means when key is on and engine off the fuel pump was running and it shouldn't be

No I see nothing to do with high water unless it came into the cab and got PCM wet, in passenger side kick panel, if so then all sorts of odd ball codes would be set

Any running issues or do you just have the codes?

Lol sorry I did look em up just forgot to post em in a separate comment - ty for that tho. And no car runs good isles at 850-900 . When I went to smog I failed due to high hc at idle only - everything else was fine

he did mention a misfire but said it was minor and to replace car rather than hunt for the cause - I tried figuring it out and everything I checked was fine - fuel pressure, compression , timing all lined up. However while watching engine I can see it hiccup randomly , I assumed my misfire was random and would be a pain to decipher

after driving through flood tho my car was running a little rough , kept bogging while moving - not wanting to pickup speed and then out of no where it’s like I hit nitro and sped off n was fine , after 20 mins the check engine light went away and my car was normal- I assumed it was water but still wanted to check codes .

And with the fuel pump when I turn 2 clicks right before it starts, you can hear fuel pump running - I assumed this was it “priming” but I guess not - most likely a ground bad?

and with the code 14 could the random misfire cause o2 to detect a rich fuel mixture - making it cause the lean code?

Sorry and also unrelated 3 days before my heater core did go and dump coolant in my cabin - it was on carpet but not side panel where else is

Dump a can of Seafoam in the gas tank once a year and it will smooth out idle, most likely 30 year old injector screens and tips are getting clogged up, Seafoam or similar injector cleaner will help

Fuel pump should come on with the key on, and then go OFF after 2 seconds, it won't start again until RPMs are above 400, its a safety thing, i.e. if fuel line should break in an accident, electric fuel pump won't "feed a fire", engine would stall(under 400rpms) if fuel line broke so pump would shut off
Fuel pump will run for 2 seconds each time key is turned on, but only 2 seconds

If it continues to run then Fuel pump relay may be going bad, or Ground wire to Computer may be shorted to ground
Fuel pump relay gets 12v with key on, but has no ground, computer grounds it for 2 seconds, it has a timer, lol, actually several, then ungrounds it, until engine starts

O2 sensor "sees" Oxygen not fuel, so with a misfire no oxygen is burned up, and that oxygen is dumped into the exhaust manifold, so O2 would tend to show Lean voltage on a misfire, too much oxygen
Rich is too little oxygen in the exhaust

But infrequent misfires won't do anything really, especially if they happen at idle, computer ignores O2 sensor at idle and at WOT(wide open throttle)
At idle an engine will over heat if its run at regular mix ratio(14.7:1), so computer runs it slightly Rich, this also helps to keep Cats hot.
At WOT fuel economy is not the point, lol, POWER is the point so computer runs full Rich mix for best power

I’ve actually done the 3 part Seafoam , 4 ounces in oil - rest in fuel . Then the spray version into intake , noticed a difference in sound but not much in way of power. But I think I have a can somewhere I’ll add again since it’s been awhile.

And how how should I check fuel pump ground? Just follow the wire all the way inspecting for any kinks or worn rubber?

First, does the fuel pump run longer than the 2 seconds?
If not then there is no problem with that system

If it does
On the main wiring harness coming from computer thru firewall will be the OBD1 connector, so passenger side of engine bay inner fender

Look here, at second drawing: https://therangerstation.com/tech_library/OBD_I.shtml

That's what it looks like and the Fuel Pump slot is labelled in drawing
That slot is connected to the computers Ground wire for the fuel pump
If that slot is Grounded then fuel pump relay will close(if key is on)

Ground wire on computer------Computer(pin 22)---------------(OBD connector)-------------------------FP Relay--------key on 12v

Test if that slot is a Ground with key off, it shouldn't be, if it is then either wire is shorted to ground or computer is
Unplug computer connector and retest
