Failed Smog

Hey all. I brought my 1998 3.0l Ranger in today for smog. They did a Test first and it passed , barely. The NO levels were high. they suggested a new gas cap so i bought one and then they smogged it but it failed this time. WTF? they said it could the something with the EVAP but i dont know..i really dont trust these guys now..any help would be appreciated. If i left out any important info let me know plz. Oh the truck was originally from Wash. but i bought it from a Honda Dealer out here in Cali. would that have anything to do with it?

How long ago did you buy it? Might need to replace one of the three CAT-Converter. The one that is closest to the muffler.

If it passed, even barely, the first time, why did you smog it again?

excessive NOx means the system is running to lean. Check your Fuel trims and see under which conditions it is running lean. The KAM should be compensating for this unless your adjustments are off of the table, in which case you should be throwing multiple codes.

Oh boy...

Sounds like you got a nasty little situation on your hands. And why in the blue hell is California doing an emissions test to begin with on an old truck I'll never know. That truck is well over 10 years old now and it should be excempt from emissions testing in my book. And to answer your question, yes that does have alot to do with it being from out of state. CA has their own emission standards. In other words if it's legal in CA it's legal anywhere. Here in VA, the years 2001 and older are exempt from smog laws. There are 2 reasons why. The reason is because they're grandfathered in under the old 1978 smog laws. Anything after Sept. 15, 1978 requires a Catalytic Converter and that's it. 2002 and up, requires an EGR valve, catalytic converter, and 2 or more chambered muffler (here in VA of course). That was the old emissions standard. be prepared for a new set to hit in either 2010 or 2012. We can thank all those idiots that believe that B.S. about Global Warming and that's what it is, B.S.

Those butt monkeys are liers. If it was that it would throw codes left and right. I'd take it somewhere else that's authorized to do nothing but emission testing. go to your local DMV site and see which service centers that are authorized by the state of california. Not those **** monkeys you've been going to. it sounds like they're trying to rip you off to me. here's what you can do. Change the exhaust system completely. I'm talking O2 sensors, muffler, catalytic converters (use the higher flowing ones) everything. If that doesn't do it then go somewhere else cause it really does sound like someones trying to rip you off.

Your wrong again, many newer cars don't use EGR valves. It's been eliminated for a number of reasons, including variable cam timing. Evo X's came out in 2008, and in stock form the mivec handles exhaust recirculation with cam timing.

When did they do that? hell it's about time someone woke up, because we all knew it was bad news to begin with. When I first heard of this I was driving with Swift Transport and they wanted to put that **** in my 2002 Freightliner Columbia, but I fought them on that tooth and nail. it's about time they got rid of that crap. Hell I'm a little behind. 2007 must have been the last year. Cause I do remember seeing it on "some vehicles" but not all. Thanks man. That made my day a good day knowing that something bad was taken off the market. Too bad it took 5 years though.

I really am sorry but I speak the truth my friend. I lost an exhaust shop and tuning shop that way. They're long gone now because they kept ripping people off. The sad thing is that I knew those guys for nearly 20 years and I hated it. I knew those guys since grade school and it really hurt me. All of that work they put into building that business and they got greedy and in the end, it destroyed them. Very sad indeed. I hate to see someone get taken advantage of under this situation. If they truly did emissions testing, they'd use a live data stream monitoring system and showed you what was wrong with it in the first place. But instead they're jerking you around trying to sell you something you don't need. That's a problem I encountered when I had my own tuning and exhaust shop. It went under when gas was pushing nearly $5.00 bucks a gallon here. But I'm glad because it took alot of pressure off my back and my mood has changed for the better.

Yep you're right but in his case it might be a little more complicated though.

They normally don't last but 5 maybe 6 years. That of course depends on what was done to the truck by the previous owner too.
