3.0 V6- Oil Pan Leak + Trans Leak = Ouch. . .
Hey everyone,
Like the title suggests looks like I have a leak on my oil pan and also on the trans. . . . . lets start with the oil pan.
I was doing an oil change on the truck today and noticed the starter was really dirty with some kind of fluid. I looked around and noticed right above it the front of the transmission was caked with what looked like old oil. Above that on the oil pan I could see 2 bolts that were wet with oil. The rest of the oil pan and all the bolts are dry except the 2 bolts in the corner right before the transmission.
Here are some pictures:
Starter
View looking up at drain plug: You can see all the black on the front of the trans and that little black spot between the pan and starter is one of the bolts im talking about
Pointing to it
I have read on here about an oil pan gasket. Could this be the reason im leaking? I dont know how long the leak has been going for but I would guess either somewhere in the last 3,000 miles ,or, the leak started before my last oil change but was not to the point it is now so I did not notice it. It does seem like a slow leak before doing the oil change the dip stick read about half an inch from full. I also have not noticed any oil dripping on the garage floor and I probably wont since it seems like its just caking up on the trans and starter. What would be the next thing to do? How do I know if the whole oil pan has to be replaced or just the gasket?
Thanks in advance for answering this but I have yet another question below:
Also when under the truck today I noticed this on the trans:
No idea what the two cylinder looking things on the trans are but the one on the left is what I am talking about. If you guys can tell me what that is or what it looks like by looking at the pictures I would appreciate it.
Thanks a lot

greg,
the oil on and around the starter is usually caused by when the oil filter is changed, oil runs on the starter. that looks like a built up accumulation of oil from that, or possibly a valve cover leaking. you need to go to the auto parts and buy a few cans of brakleen and deusche the back of the motor down starting at the valve covers, the oil filter from in the wheel well, and the starter so you can better see where the oil is coming from.
as for the trans, those are the two servos on the side of the trans which are known for some seepage. if it gets to the point where they are dripping,. i can replace them with no gaurantee that it will stop the leak. sometimes the servo bore wears out and they wont seal, but its worth a try

Justin I can see the oil filter dripping on the starter from the change but what about all that oil on the front of the trans and how its wet up by the oil pan. I can see wet oil on that bolt im pointing to with the pencil. Is it true you have to remove the front axle or take out the engine just to change the pain and or gasket?

Crap I always forget im different then 4wd. All of the oil is on the drivers side and on the pictures. The biggest reason I suspect it to be the oil pan or oil pan gasket is because looking at all the other bolts on that pan is clean with no oil until you get to the drivers side the two are wet and that is where all the oil is accumulating. Ill get a closer look at it on Wednesday and clean it with brakleen and all. Is labor at a dealer where I would get rapped if the problem is having to replace a oil pan or gasket?
