Hate to ask, How to check tranny fluid? 89 2.9L V6 Manual

I read the instruction manual to find there is not a dip stick for the this.
I've tried google with no luck.

Manual says there's a plug and I check / insert thru it.
I've not spent a ton of time under the hood/truck to know what I'm looking for.

when I climb under the truck, I do know what the transmission is (lol). can someone guide me from there?
Lets say I'm laying under the truck, head towards the front of truck feet towards the rear, I'm looking up at the tranny. Is it right in front of me, on top? closer to rear or front? driver or passenger side?

Again, I hate to ask, as it shows a lack of mechanical basic knowledge.
Changed oil last week, and checked other fluids just fine, but the tranny fluid has eluded me.

Thanks! :)

on the drivers side of your transmission there are two plugs, the higher one is a fill and the lower one is a drain. both should be 1" or around there. take the top one off and stick your pinkey in and you should feel fluid, ie the fluid should be level with the drain plug. make sure your truck is level, so if you have rake or a load in the bed compensate for that. the best way is to put it on a lift, cuz you have a better chance to be level and you'll have more room to work with. but if you pull the top plug the fluid should be level with it.
