Diesel Noise

Diesel Noise
It may be because Im used to driving a prius, but whenever I take off from a dead stop and dont really rev the engine while letting off the clutch, my truck sounds like its a diesel. I can tell because my step dad has a 97 250 powerstroke. Is it supposed to sound like this? Or is there something wrong.

If I pull away from a stop with very little gas off the clutch I get the same sound. Like if you're in 3rd but you really should be in 2nd and you're on the gas........just too low RPM's. Always had it, even before I slapped a new clutch kit in there. Gues it's just one of those 3.0L mysteries. LOL

I disagree. You shouldn't even be ABLE to lug it in first gear pulling out.
You should be able to IDLE and let the clutch fully out (slowly enough that it doesn't stall) then press the gas hard and accelerate. If it clatters when you do that, it's PINGING and needs fixed. If it does that AND you have larger than stock tires, you are lugging it and should consider re-gearing. You should be able to IDLE up small hills in first gear and if you hit the gas it should accelerate with no odd noises.
If it won't do that, you may need plugs, wires, IAC, Intake cleaning, engine decarboned (Seafoam), EGR problem, etc. If it's really just a clutch-related noise, I wouldn't worry about it until the clutch goes bad.
Lastly, CHECK your transmission and Transfer case ATF fluid levels.
Many many many MO5D trannies die from lack of fluid.

Nah. Mine has been doing it since I bought it with 35K and all the maintenance is up to date. I have heard other Rangers do the same thing as well. Its not pinging because it more of a rattle type of noise and it comes from the stick. It's just a sh!tty tranny. Also the my I'm only running 31 inch tires with the stock 4.10 gearing. There is no way the tires are lugging it.

I think I might have figured out what it is. Today I drove back from Corpus Christi and about 15mi from San Antonio I start hearing the noise (very loudly) and a serious loss power. I get off the highway and pull into a gas station only for the engine to start smoking. Turns out, my radiator fluid is a nice dark brown color and was boiling away inside the engine bay. Tomorrow Im gonna do a full radiator flush and get some new fluid. Maybe then I wont hear it as much.
