Lack of Power / Gear Ratio
Lack of Power / Gear Ratio
I just bought a 2000 XLT 3.0L Auto 4x4. The truck came with new LT285's BFG's. I though that I could live with the lack of power, but over time I'm realizing that the lack of power is driving me NUTS! The gear ratios I believe are the standard 3.7? / 4.1. I've thought about stepping up to a 4.0L. ANYBODY with ANY suggestions????
if you up size then go a 5.0/ 302 v8, more bang for the same amount of buck, find a donor truck and buy the whole truck as you will need every thing in the engine compartment just like a 4.0 swap
or go back to stock tires
or go back to stock tires
A 5.0L would be nice AND I have done one '88 Ranger/'93 5.0L, and would like one in this Ranger but ... the 3.0L isn THAT bad !
My '03 has a 3.0L, 5-sp, came with 4.10s and 29" tires; but now has 4.56 and 33" tires, and works well, yes still a little under powered but with 4.56 gears it is drivable.
Remember to set your gear ratio for the power band/rpm of the engine you have and the driving type you will do.
I could have gone 4.88s and easily lived with them for more power but I wanted a little highway use so I went with the 4.56s.
