Speedo and Odo issues

what is the best way on an 01 ranger to check the speedometer cable or instrument cluster as the tachometer works, but the trip odometer and speedometer, and regular odometer epically doesn't work ?

any recommended fixes?

You probably need to pull the cluster and replace the [insert technical name for the speedometer thing]

Be careful pulling the cluster (if you ave an auto) because you might snap the shift indicator wire

lol mine went through some yanks when I took mine out and didnt snap.. well, atleast I don't think it did, I haven't put it back in yet :P haha guess we'll see.. wish you'd of told me that before I took my cluster out ): but, its relatively easy to pull the cluster out other than that.. pretty sure there is a howto or something around here on how to pull the cluster.

Check your speed sensor and its fuses. The sensor is located on the transmission.

honestly, don't take it to a shop.. you'll get handed a big bill for something you'll realize you could do yourself.. I'm no mechanic or electronic specialist, but its pretttty easy to get the cluster out and check some things.. and yeah, like demise said, check your cluster fuse and whatever other fuses might have to do with it.

well, you need to have a little more confidence
I'm sure you'll be fine, just ask here again like you did if you run into any problems!

trial and error isnt a confidence booster or anything, but its definitely a good way to learn, even though you screw something up.. good luck on your adventure.

I replaced the Speedometer cable on my truck. It was surprisingly easy. Just take the IC out of the dash after disconnecting the battery and disconnect the cable. Then go under the truck and disconnect it from the speed sensor. You just pull it out of the floor with the grommet that is attached to it. Installation is the reverse. Have Fun! :D

It was the connection from the speed cable to the head! It didn't fully slide in! So I ordered a cable from LMC Truck, and it fit perfectly!

95+ trucks do not have a speedo cable. 95-97 gets it's signal off the trans, 98+ gets it's signal from the abs sensor on the rear end.

I would replace the abs sensor in the rear end before I would pull a cluster. That and check all your fuses. If the dome lights dont work, the speedo might not either, and its just a fuse.

that may be the case, but most of the people asking about this have much newer than that. so the info you passed along means nothing to the rest of them. that needed to be stated so false info wasn't passed along.
